Two-a-days have arrived

August 4, 2012

Football athletes at all four of the high schools located in Nolan County are scheduled to report for their first workouts on Monday.
Sweetwater athletes will have morning practices this week from 7-9:30 a.m., and varsity and JV players will also have evening practices from 7-9:30 p.m. Monday and Wednesday, according to new Mustang head coach Shane Mobley, who expects between 75-80 players to report. Full contact workouts begin Friday. Sweetwater is at home for its first scrimmage Aug. 18 against Wichita Falls Hirschi Aug. 18 and for its season opener Aug. 31 against Eastland at the Sammy Baugh Classic.
Mobley said players who have not yet registered but do so Monday morning will be allowed to practice that evening, although physicals should be taken prior to the first practice.
The new football season will also get started Monday for the athletes at Roscoe, Blackwell and Highland.
Roscoe head coach Jonathan Haseloff expects a bigger player turnout from a year ago, estimating 45-48 athletes will report to Plowboy Field tomorrow after fewer than 35 showed up a year ago. Practices will be held between 7-10:30 a.m. this week, with the first scrimmage set for Aug. 17 against Haskell. Roscoe faces DeLeon in its opener Aug. 30 at Sweetwater’s Sammy Baugh Classic.
Highland coach Jeff Shelton expects 22-25 players to report on Monday. The team is at Jayton for its first scrimmage Aug. 18 and for its season opener Aug. 31 vs. Motley County, a game that will be one of many at Jayton’s three-day Gridiron Classic.
While Sweetwater made news by bringing back Mobley last spring, Blackwell has also filled an opening at its head coaching position a few weeks ago after Nathan Hayes resigned to become the head coach at Crowell.
Clint Lowry, formerly of Rising Star, is Blackwell’s new head coach and said Friday he had just begun settling in. The Lowry era in Blackwell begins just over two weeks after he coached the East team on July 21 at the Texas Six-Man Coaches Association Division II all-star game in Wolfforth.
Players will be working out this week from 7:30-10:30 a.m. Blackwell opens its season by hosting West-brook on Aug. 31.
