Sweetwater hosts “Godspell” musical production

February 14, 2011

Sweetwater High School

Sweetwater’s historic Municipal Auditorium will host a live Broadway musical on Saturday evening, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. when “Godspell” takes the stage.
“Godspell” is a production of Abilene High School’s drama department and choir, and is directed by Clay Freeman. Freeman was Sweetwater High School’s drama director in the 1970s and took Sweetwater students to second place in state theater competition in 1973.
“Godspell” features Abilene High School students in live theater, music and dance. A live band accompanies the production. Freeman’s production is a lively interpretation of the Broadway musical with highly talented student performers.
This is the only tour stop for the Abilene High School show, brought to Sweetwater because of Freeman’s long-time connections to Sweetwater. Freeman produced “Godspell” at the Municipal Auditorium in 1983 and also produced numerous summer theater events with local students in the 1970s as some of the earliest efforts to revitalize the Municipal Auditorium.
Saturday night, Feb. 19, will be the only performance here.
Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for students. Tickets are available at the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce and at the door. Tickets are also being distributed to area youth through churches and high school drama programs throughout the Rolling Plains by donations from sponsors. Active duty and recently deployed military and their families will be admitted for free.
Sponsors include Lawrence Brothers IGA Supermarkets, Double S Ranch, Texas TST, Rees Rees & Fuller Attorneys, Cox Jewelers, Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce, Sweetwater Rotary Club, Sweetwater Lions Club, Sweetwater Regional Federal Credit Union, Morgan Real Estate, McCoy Funeral Home, New Amsterdam Global Solutions LLC and the Mayor’s Youth Task Force.
Beneficiaries of the “Godspell” performance include the Municipal Auditorium and area youth initiatives through the Nolan County Ministerial Alliance.
