A flag honoring the 2012 Sweetwater softball team for making the playoffs was unveiled in a brief pre-game ceremony on Friday at the Jerry Collins Complex.
Then it was the 2013 Lady Mustangs’ turn to make a impression, and they were up to the challenge in their District 4-3A opener against Snyder.
After falling behind 2-0, Sweetwater sent 14 batters to the plate in the bottom of the second inning against three pitchers and scored 10 runs to take a commanding 10-2 lead. After that, it was just a matter of bringing it home as the Lady Mustangs held on for an 11-8 victory.
Suede Shirley began the 10-run second with a double and also singled in the inning, and all nine starters reached base at least once.
After Shirley’s first hit, Jerren Villa and Alyssa Heredia were hit by pitches to load the bases and Abby Garcia ripped a two-run single. Heredia made it 3-2 by stealing home, and ano-ther two-run single, this one by Morgan Gomez, scored Megan Holsey and Gomez to make it 5-2.
Snyder brought in a new pitcher, but Kelsi Crosson greeted her with a two-run homer to increase the lead to 7-2. A double by Maty Montgomery and Shirley’s single made it 8-2 to force another pitching change, but the scoring wasn’t over for Sweetwater. After a walk to Heredia, Kendra Crosson plated the final runs of the inning with another two-RBI single.
It became 11-2 in the third when Holsey doubled and scored on Kelsi Crosson’s RBI grounder.
Sweetwater (15-9) then held on as Snyder, which had 13 hits, narrowed the lead by scoring six runs over the next three innings to make it 11-8. But Montgomery, after allowing a one-out single and hitting a batter, got the last two outs to seal the victory. She recorded three strikeouts with no walks.
Friday’s win marked the 11th time for Sweetwater to score at least 10 runs in a game this season. The Mus-tangs host Midland Green-wood at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
