Sweetwater continues district hoops play

With lopsided losses at Wylie last Friday followed by disappointing home defeats on Tuesday against Big Spring, the past week hasn’t been a lot of fun for Sweetwater’s varsity basketball teams.
They likely will have to avoid a similar fate over the next two games in order to keep their playoff chances alive, but both games — starting today with contests at Midland Greenwood at 6:15 (girls) and 7:30 p.m. (boys) — will be on the road. Sweetwater also goes to Monahans on Tuesday before returning home next Friday to face Snyder.
The Sweetwater girls’ 41-40 overtime loss Tuesday to Big Spring dropped them into a third-place tie with the Lady Steers at 3-3 in District 4-3A. Meanwhile, Greenwood (5-1) solidified its hold on second by beat-ing Monahans 60-35. Wylie is first with a 6-0 record while Snyder (1-5) and Monahans (0-6) are at the bottom of the pack.
Meanwhile, the Sweetwa-ter boys are 1-3 after losing 49-39 to Big Spring while Greenwood (3-1) is tied with Monahans for second place after upsetting the No. 21-ranked Loboes Tuesday. The Mustangs may have to pull off an upset of their own in the next two games to have a realistic playoff shot as they also trail Wylie (4-0) in the district, though there are still six games left. Big Spring is 1-3 in district while Snyder is 0-4.
