The Sweetwater Stam-pede, an Arena League foot-ball team of fourth and fifth graders, defeated Abilene’s Jets 41-6 this past weekend and have a second-round playoff game at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Abilene Expo Center against the Abilene Chargers.
The winner plays either Abilene’s Cowboys or the Jim Ned Indians for the championship at 1:30 p.m.
The public is encouraged to come watch as the Stam-pede (8-0), which has given up just 48 points all season, goes for the title. The team is coached by Sammy Alva-rez Jr., Joe Hall, Randy Melendez, Roger Rudel and Matt Figueroa.
Last week, the Stampede used Koby Clark’s interception to set up its first touchdown by Kiante McCoy. On the next offensive series, McCoy threw a 35-yard pass to Chris Thompson for a touchdown, and McCoy then scored again on a 28-yard toss.
Andrew Melendez caught two passes from Thompson, the team’s quarterback, that set up Melendez’s 20-yard scoring run.
Justen Gomez also caught a 15-yard pass which set up Noah Martinez’s 10-yard scoring run while a 30-yard pass from Thompson, this one to Isak Alvarez, also found the end zone.
Also, Thompson kicked two extra points. Coaches gave credit to the linemen and receivers for staying with their blocks.
A fumbled snap that was recovered by the Jets, who then ran the ball in for a TD, produced the only score for Abilene. Clark had a safety that was another highlight for the Stampede, which did a great job defensively.
