SW girls lose at Brownwood to start district; boys beat Merkel

BROWNWOOD — Sweetwater was able to keep pace over the last three quarters, but No. 13 Brownwood beat the Lady Mustangs 73-62 on Tuesday in Sweetwater’s District 5-4A opener.
Brownwood (23-4, 1-1) never trailed after taking a 24-13 lead at the end of the first period but could never shake Sweetwater (7-16) in the contest.
Tavis Black had a game-high 24 points and Jessica Poe added 12 points for the Lady Mustangs, who will entertain Big Spring (0-2) when they return to action on Friday. Brownwood had four players who scored in double figures, with Sage Cupps leading the way with 22 points.
Sweetwater never got closer than 61-52 in the second half.
But led by Black, who had 15 fourth-quarter points, the Lady Mustangs kept the Lady Lions from getting too comfortable until the end.
Shavie Green scored nine, Amber Knox eight, Kyla Daniel seven and Nevaeh Sarabia two.
The JV girls also lost, 41-21.
Brownwood was coming off a 52-29 loss to Wylie (2-0), which Tuesday beat Big Spring 70-37 and has the district lead over 1-0 Snyder, which did not play.

MERKEL — A total of four players — J.L. Solis (17), Kobe Clark (14), Kiante McCoy (11) and Jackson Foster (10) — hit double figures against Merkel for Sweetwater in its last non-district game Tuesday.
Sweetwater, which is now 6-14 overall, led 8-7 after one quarter but went on an 8-0 run at the end of the first half to increase its lead to 10 points, 28-18. Merkel hung in and narrowed it to four points, 50-46, with less than three minutes to play.
But the Mustangs ended on an 8-0 run.
Sweetwater, which hosts Big Spring in its District 5-4A opener Friday, also got six points from Ky Hoover against Merkel.
