It may have been a bad night for Sweetwater’s two varsity basketball teams here Tuesday against Wylie, but there was good news.
The Sweetwater girls (5-4, 19-14) can still advance to the playoffs by beating Big Spring (5-4, 17-15) this Friday in a District 4-3A tiebreaker to decide who will get the No. 3 playoff berth.
Although the Lady Mus-tangs lost 79-34 to Wylie in their regular season finale, Big Spring was unable to take advantage Tuesday, losing 44-39 at Greenwood. That means Sweetwater and Big Spring will play their tiebreaker starting at 6:30 p.m. Friday at San Angelo Lake View High School.
Friday’s winner will face Fort Stockton, the second-place team in District 3-3A, in bi-district next week.
The top two girls playoff spots in District 4-3A this year will go to Wylie (10-0) and Greenwood (8-2).
Tuesday’s game started out terribly as the Lady Mustangs lost guard Suede Shirley to an injury in the opening minute. When play resumed, Sweetwater took a 2-0 lead on a short jump shot by Kendra Crosson. After that, it was all Wylie as the Lady Bulldogs ran off 12 straight points en route to an easy win over the Lady Mustangs. Shirley didn’t return, but is expected to be available for Friday’s game.
Shelby Cason led Sweet-water with eight points and Kendra Crosson had seven. Kayla Chowning scored six, Hayley Brownlow and Elise Lawrence five and Kelsi Crosson three.
The boys fared no better against Wylie, losing 78-39 and falling to 2-6 in district and 13-13 for the season.
Sweetwater’s loss, plus Big Spring’s upset win over Greenwood, dropped the Mustangs into fifth place with two games left. Mona-hans (6-2) is now in second place after defeating Snyder Tuesday, with Wylie (8-0) in first place and Greenwood (5-3) now in third.
Sweetwater got double-figure scoring from Kaleb Hoover (12 points) against Wylie. Deandre Gatson ad-ded seven, Dylan Bennett five, Rhett Torres four and Cole Maxwell, J.P. Poe and Quentin Wetsel three and Michael Hunt two.
