After missing the first 11 games of the 2012-13 basketball season due to an injury he suffered at the end of football season, Sweetwater’s Kaleb Hoover showed little rust in his return Tuesday night against Colorado City.
In fact, last season’s district Newcomer of the Year appears ready for the start of 4-3A action which is less than a month away. The 6-1 junior scored a team-high 19 points in leading the Mustangs to a 45-42 victory, completing a doubleheader sweep at Sweetwater’s gym.
Hoover scored eight of his points during a 15-7 third-quarter run that put the Mustangs (5-7) ahead to stay after trailing by a point, 21-20, at halftime. His last basket gave Sweetwater a 43-33 lead with 1:42 left.
Colorado City went on a 9-2 run by hitting three 3-pointers, the last with :08 left, but Sweetwater held on for the win. Dylan Bennett had eight points, Michael Hunt five, Jack Poe four, Isaiah McGee three and Cole Maxwell, Sean Morrow and Rhett Torres two.
Sweetwater’s girls used a 12-0 finishing run and Kendra Crosson’s 10 points to beat Colorado City, 40-35, in Tuesday’s opener and improve to 12-7.
Sweetwater trailed near-ly all the way until its dra-matic finishing surge and was down by seven, 35-28, with less than five minutes left. But baskets by Kelsi Crosson, Suede Shirley and Kathleen Campbell tied it and Kayla Chowning’s three-point play put the Lady Mustangs up 38-35 with 1:45 to play — only their second lead of the game to that point. Chowning and Kendra Crosson then hit free throws to ice the win.
It was the final action for both Sweetwater teams until after the Christmas break next week when they play in holiday tournaments, with the boys going to Anson and the girls traveling to Slaton.
“On offense we played just good enough for the first 3 1/2 quarters to stay with Colorado City,” said girls coach Al Miller. “Our press saved us in the end by creating some much needed turnovers late in the game.”
Elise Lawrence finished with eight points while Kel-si Crosson and Shirley had five and Campbell, Chown-ing and Shelby Cason all scored four points.
Colorado City was held scoreless over the final 4:43 of the contest.
