Sweetwater varsity basketball

After road trips to Merkel and Stanton this past week, Sweetwater High School’s varsity basketball teams are both playing at home today. But their opponents will be from different schools. The SHS girls will host Lamesa at 6 p.m. at Mustang Gym, while the SHS boys entertain Breckenridge at 7:30 this evening.
After a 35-30 loss to state-ranked Merkel on Thursday, the Lady Mustangs (9-8) won their last three games at Stanton’s tournament.
Sweetwater beat Midland Christian 50-42 and Grape Creek 48-32, then rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Reagan County 43-38 and win the consolation title.
Taylor McKoy made the all-tournament team for Sweetwater, which had to overcome a 31-27 deficit against Reagan County.
The SHS boys (4-6), who after a promising 4-1 start have lost five straight, are hoping to get their season back on track. After losing a 45-43 overtime decision on Thursday against Merkel to open the Stanton tourney, the Mustangs lost to Tahoka 60-50 on Friday in their final tournament game.
Paxton Kelley scored 16 points in both games for Sweetwater, while Dylon Adames also scored 16 against Tahoka after scoring 14 points against Merkel. Taylor Jones also had 10 points against Tahoka. Sweetwater led 16-6 after one quarter and 29-24 at halftime on Friday until Tahoka staged a huge rally, outscoring the Mustangs 25-6 in the third quarter for a 49-35 advantage.
Sweetwater won the fourth period 15-11, but it wasn’t enough.
After playing well but losing to Merkel, the Sweetwater girls won three straight to equal their longest win streak of the season. Alicia Finn had 17 points and McKoy 14 against Midland Christian. Then McKoy had 18 points against Grape Creek to help the Lady Mustangs reach Saturday’s consolation final against Reagan County, where McKoy scored 11 points, Finn 10, Kinsey Browning eight and Aubra Hendrix seven.
The Blackwell and Highland girls will both move into the most important part of their seasons starting today as two teams tip off play in their respective districts. Blackwell hosts Veribest and Highland entertains Hermleigh, while both of the boys teams are idle. The Roscoe girls and boys will host Albany in non-district action.
