Sweetwater Lady Stangs softball

One bad inning — that’s all that kept the Sweetwa-ter High School softball team from first-place honors at its own tournament held this past weekend.
Still, it was a pretty good three days as the Lady Mustangs finished third at their event and suffered only one defeat at the Jerry Collins Complex.
After winning its pool with four straight victories on Thursday, Sweetwater (6-3) defeated Perryton 6-1 on Friday to start bracket play. The Lady Mustangs then suffered their only lapse of the tournament in Saturday’s semifinal, fal-ling 12-4 to Jim Ned after giving up nine runs in the final inning to squander a 4-3 lead. But Sweetwater came back in the third-place game later that day to defeat Stamford 6-3 and end the tournament on a high note. That game was the last for Sweetwater until this Saturday, when the Lady Mustangs play a 10:30 a.m. game at San Angelo Lake View.
Taylor McKoy was the winning pitcher against Stamford, hurling 4 1/3 innings until Alicia Finn came in to get the final two outs. Jackie Carey had two RBI and Kelsi Crosson and Finn one, with Finn’s coming on a home run.
Finn was the winning pitcher against Perryton as she threw a five-inning complete game, while McKoy (three hits, three RBI) led the offense. Finn had two doubles and two RBI against Jim Ned, and McKoy and Crosson also had RBI. In pool play, Finn had six RBI in wins over Anson (5-2) and Winters (10-3). Sweetwater also defeated Post 11-2 and be-gan with a 7-0 forfeit win over Hamlin.
