Lady Mustangs trail Snyder by 29 with 36 holes to play

Sweetwater High School’s girls golf team is in second place after hosting the first round of the district golf tournament on Tuesday at Sweetwater Country Club, although no Lady Mustang is currently among the top five medalists.
Sweetwater shot 370 as a team to outdistance everyone except Snyder, which shot 341 to take a 29-stroke lead in the 54-hole event, which resumes next Monday at Wylie.
Sarah Witt had Sweetwa-ter’s best individual round. Witt carded a 90, putting her in a tie for sixth place and nine out of the lead.
Katie High shot 92 for Sweetwater and is currently tied for 10th place, while the other three members of the team — Elise Lawrence (94), Jodie May (94) and Alex Gomez (95) are all just outside the top 10 after the opening round of the 5-3A tournament.
The first-place medalist is Snyder’s Emma Nunley, who shot an 81 and has a three-shot lead over team-mate Krysha Burleson, who shot an 84. Only five golfers were able to break 90.
Rounding out the top five in the team standings after Tuesday’s chilly first round are Brownwood (383), Wylie (387) and Snyder No. 2 (404).
The top two teams at district, as well as the top two medalists not on one of the top two teams, will advance to the regional tournament at Lubbock.
Sweetwater’s No. 2 team shot 422 on Tuesday and is in sixth place with 36 holes to play, while Brownwood No. 2 shot 487.
Amy Witt led Sweetwater No. 2’s effort as she finished with a 98.
The other members of the team were Haylee Stewart, who shot 106; Angela Virgen, who shot 107; Leila Rubio, who shot 111; and Christian Richardson, who shot 120. Rachel Hunt (109), Molly Fincher (111) and Sierra Hernandez (117) all competed as medalists for Sweetwater.
After the second round at Wylie on April 5, the final leg of the tournament will be at Snyder on April 12.
