SHS Class of 1961 Scholarships in Memory of Ronnie Cox

This year’s SHS Class of 1961 Scholarships will be presented in memory of class member and Sweetwater resident Ronnie Cox. Cox was a class officer, played on the Mustang football and basketball teams, was a Mr. Mustang finalist, and was in Who’s Who among other things at Sweetwater (Newman) High School. He graduated from Rice University where he played football.
After receiving his B.A. degree in economics from Rice University in Houston, he returned to Sweetwater in 1965 where he took over the family business, Cox Jewelry on the south side of the square. He was a prominent business and civic leader. Cox was on the Board of Directors for Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital, Nolan County Foundation, First Financial Bank, First Financial Trust & Management, and other community organizations. Cox was selected as Outstanding Young Citizen in 1977. He won the highest award presented by the American Gem also was an officer, including the President for the American Gem Society. He also served on the International Board of the Gem Society and the American Gem Society Laboratory in Las Vegas, Nevada.
