SEED announces dates for Senior Interview Day

March 13, 2014

The dates for the Senior Interview Days were announced at Monday's meeting of the SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) board of directors.
Kirstin Smith, the Marketing and Administrative Director for SEED, shared in her report that on March 31 and April 1, seniors from three area schools will take part in mock interviews to prepare them for the future workforce. Highland will participate in this year's event, along with Sweetwater ISD and Roscoe Collegiate ISD.
Also looking ahead, SEED will once again be attending the AWEA (American Wind Energy Association) Windpower conference. This year, they will be sharing a booth with the High Ground of Texas.
Additionally, it was reported that over 55 people were in attendance at the NTE Energy luncheon held last week. Attending the event were leaders from Sweetwater, Blackwell, Nolan County, NTE, TDA and Mitsubishi Hitachi Power Systems.
In his report, SEED Executive Director Ken Becker shared that sales tax receipts reported from March 2014 were up from the same time last year; since 2007, sales tax has increased approximately 30%. And in the next few months, design work should start on the new business park.
Also, SEED is working with an International Site Selector group by providing valuable information on Sweetwater and Nolan County to its members. These companies work with national as well as international companies who are looking at business relocation or expansion.
Furthermore, Becker announced that, stemming from his service as a board member of the Texas Economic Development Council (TEDC), he was appointed as a co-chair to their newly formed Water Committee. A committee meeting was held last week in conjunction with the TDEC spring membership meeting.
Various water statistics were shared, in that January 2014 had the fifth lowest rain total in Texas since 1895. Statewide, reservoirs are 64% full--the lowest since 1990.
In addition, they plan to meet with the Texas Water Development Board and three other groups in an effort to provide education to TEDC members about the water concerns within the state.
