The local fascination with rattlesnakes will be getting some national attention this Wednesday evening.
Sweetwater Jaycee Riley Sawyers, along with friends Allen Wells and Brandon Watson, will be appearing on the pilot episode of "Rattlesnake Republic" on Animal Planet. The show will be broadcast at 9 p.m. on Wednesday night, June 22.
Though unable to divulge some of the show's happenings due to contract stipulations, Sawyers did share that his hunting expedition was filmed close to the Sweetwater area. He also said that while hunting would take place, there would be no rattlesnake killing featured on the episode.
In addition, the show has no ties to the World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up held each March in Sweetwater, only highlighting the hunt for rattlesnakes. Sawyers has been a Sweetwater Jaycee for the past 20 years, most notably serving as the group's president on two occasions.
Sawyers also noted that while the camera crews did slow the hunt down a bit, there wasn't much of a difference in the hunt as the cameras followed them.
Recalling how fun it was to be given the opportunity to show others how to hunt rattlesnakes, Sawyers simply stated: "It was a great experience."
According to the channel's website, "Rattlesnake Republic" highlights the Texas landscape where hunting and capturing "the continent's most dangerous predator" takes place. Four hunting teams of rattlesnake wranglers are followed throughout their adventures as they make their living.
