Four area teams are off to a good start at Highlandâ€™s Hilltop Classic after winning their first-round games that were played Thursday.
The Roscoe girls and boys beat Blackwell 60-18 and 47-40, respectively, to reach todayâ€™s semifinals. The girls were to play Garden City at 3:30 p.m. and the boysâ€™ tilt, also vs. Garden City, is at 8 p.m. The winners play for the title at 5 and 5:30 p.m., respectively, on Saturday.
Highlandâ€™s girls cruised past Robert Lee 48-17 on Thursday and the boys won 61-35 over Baird. Sierra Allen scored 28 points for the girls, while Ron Coving-ton had 18 and Kaden Nachlinger 12 for the boys, who trailed 12-7 after the first period before seizing complete control. The girls had a easier time as they led 12-2 after one quarter and 20-5 at halftime. The girls play Eldorado at 6:30 p.m. and the boys play Robert Lee at 8 p.m. in their respective semifinals. Blackwellâ€™s girls were to play Sands at 2 p.m. today, and the boys play Jayton at 5 p.m. Wins by Roscoe and Highland could set up two all-Nolan County title games on Saturday.
Roscoeâ€™s girls were led by Carolina Perezâ€™s 14 points while the boys got 14 points by Jesus Leanos. Stephanie Metcalf scored nine points for Blackwellâ€™s girls, while Mason Magness scored 12 and Ethan Andrews 10 for the Blackwell boys.
