New pastor at First Presbyterian Church

November 23, 2012

Pastor Kary Fry from Bronte comes to First Presbyterian Church after almost a year of work from the Pastor Nominating Committee. She will be formally installed as the pastor this Sunday, November 25 at 4 p.m.

First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater is welcoming a new face to their congregation and the community: their pastor.
Pastor Kary Fry from Bronte comes to the church after almost a year of work from the Pastor Nominating Committee. Making up the committee is chairman Ruthann Campbell, Keith Brock, Jeannette Bryant, Buck Cason and Richard Smola.
"We believe that God has led us together in finding Pastor Fry to receive our call," the committee stated. "She has been interviewed and highly approved by our Presbytery Committee on Ministry."
Fry--a fourth-generation Presbyterian--was ordained on October 16, 1983 and is a member of the Palo Duro Presbytery. Before accepting the local church's call, she served as supply pastor at the Trinity Presbyterian Church in Midland.
According to the pastor nominating committee, Pastor Fry's experience, enthusiasm and leadership style matched the church's vision, mission and characteristics.
"She has been active in all governing bodies of the church. She is an excellent fit for [First Presbyterian Church], bringing unique gifts, skills, experiences and accomplishments to us and our worship."
Fry's formal education includes a Bachelor of Arts degree from Austin College in Sherman, Texas; Master of Arts from the Presbyterian School of Christian Education from Richmond, Virginia; a Master of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Austin; and elementary certification from Angelo State University.
Upon her ordination, Fry served three years as pastor at the First Presbyterian Church at Sterling City. For the next twenty-five years, she would serve in area churches as Pastor and as Associate Pastor of Christian education and youth.
She was also a supply preacher for several churches, and for a short time Fry was a stay at home mother. Furthermore, she has worked as a third grade teacher in an area school district and later served as a chaplain of Hospice of San Angelo.
Fry's varied list of ministry also includes a number of services, such as Sunday school teacher, VBS (Vacation Bible School) director, vice president of Ministerial Alliance, Bread for the World area coordinator, speaker for Walk to Emmaus, Austin College Parents’ Weekend speaker and as a coordinator of the First Presbyterian Guatemala Mission Trip.
Additionally, she has served as commissioner to Synod--four years on the Committee on Higher Education, two years as commissioner to the General Assembly, three years on the Committee on Ministry, two years (Presbytery) on the Committee on Representation, and two years (Presbytery) on the Committee on Education. In 2009, Fry was also the recipient of the San Angelo Women of Distinction Award.
In December 2002, Fry lost her first husband suddenly. Two years ago, Fry remarried to Mike Fry, who had also lost his wife after an illness.
“We have felt God’s great blessing," she said. "We both married our best friends the first time around; and now we have married our best friend again.”
Kary had been a single parent for nine years, raising her three children who now range from 21 to 25 years old. Mike has two grown sons and currently serves as the marketing manager for Mueller Steel Buildings in Ballinger.
On the church's website, Pastor Fry's love for ministry is evident, as she states, “I am excited about the ministry of Jesus Christ. I will work diligently to serve the members of Christ’s church through preaching, teaching, leading, service and example.” She will be formally installed as the pastor this Sunday, November 25 at 4 p.m.
