AUSTIN — Ryan Mercer of Sweetwater became the third member of his family to win all-state honors after completing his final round with a 149 total on Friday at the Class 3A boys golf tournament.
Mercer, who opened with a two-over-par 73 at the Roy Kizer Golf Course that left him just two shots off the lead, shot 76 on Friday and wound up in a tie for fifth place with Brayden Brown of Prosper, just four off the lead. He shot 36 on the front nine but had 40 on the final nine. Still, he became the third Mercer to finish among the top 10 at the state tourney, joining brother Shane (2001) and sister Brittany (2005), who both went to Austin as part of a team.
Mercer, a junior, was ma-king his first state appear-ance. He had the lowest score of any golfer who did not play with a team. Mercer has been a regional qualifier the past three years and was second at this year’s event.
