A memorial blood drive for Joe Rivas will take place on Thursday, Nov. 1. Meek Blood Center will have bloodmobiles at the Nolan County Courthouse and the Sweetwater Spine Clinic from noon until 6 p.m. The clinic is located at 1413 Hailey.
According to information provided by Joe’s mother, Lee Cantu, Joe passed away on Nov. 26, 2007 after a 4 1/2 year battle with Ewing’s sarcoma. Joe received many blood transfusions during his treatment, and was grateful for each pint of blood he received.
Blood donors are needed on a daily basis to take care of patients with a variety of medical needs and conditions. The need for a blood transfusion is usually immediate, and adequate supply of all blood types that has been processed and tested must be available at all times. There is no artificial substitute for human blood. All blood products used for blood transfusions must come from volunteer donors. Meek Blood Center supplies all of the blood used for patient care at seventeen area hospitals covering fourteen counties, including Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Each donor will receive a mini-physical, cholesterol test and a T-shirt.
