Casey Campbell, 34, was arrested on Sunday, May 1, 2011, for online solicitation of a minor/sexual contact, a second degree felony.
"We received a tip back in November from a concerned citizen that Campbell was prowling on Facebook, trying to become friendly with teenage girls," said Sweetwater Chief of Police Jim Kelley. "So we created a Facebook page for a 15-year-old girl," Kelley added.
Kelley stated that last Thursday and Friday, Campbell was "very explicit in what he wanted to do to this underage girl."
Kelley also stated that officers on the page would repeatedly state, "I'm only 15 years old," so that Campbell clearly knew that the girl was underage.
Officers set up a meeting for Campbell and the fictional 15-year-old girl and Campbell showed up to the meeting where he was arrested. With Campbell's permission, Sweetwater police officers also seized his computer and it has been turned over to ICE (U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement) for search of any illegal images.
"There are some scary people out there and parents really need to be aware of where their children are going online and who they are talking to online," stated Kelley. "Parents need to talk to their kids and more importantly, parents need to listen to their kids."
Kelley states that the second degree felony, punishable by 2-20 years in prison, could be enhanced due to a prior felony conviction. In 2002, Campbell was convicted of injury to an elderly person, a third degree felony. He was sentenced to eight years in the Texas Department of Criminal Justice on Sept. 6, 2002.
Campbell pled guilty to the charge and had three other charges dropped from an indictment handed down on Feb. 1, 2002. The charges included two counts of aggravated sexual assault and two counts of injury to an elderly person. The indictment stated that Campbell sexually penetrated a 65-year-old woman. The incidents occurred at Sweetwater Healthcare Center in January of 2002.
"Campbell is a sexual predator and I hope he goes away for a long time," said Kelley.
