Local Girl Scout to throw first pitch at Texas Rangers game

April 5, 2013

Luz Cano, local Brownie Girl Scout

Brownie Girl Scout Luz Cano will have the opportunity of a lifetime when she throws out the first pitch at the Texas Rangers vs. Los Angeles Angels game on Sunday, April 7. The lucky second grader from Blackwell was chosen out of thousands of girls from across the Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains council.
“Luz will turn eight on April 12, so this is a wonderful early birthday present,” said Norma Cano, Luz’s mom and troop co-leader. “We are big baseball fans and this will be our first time attending a professional baseball game.”
The Girl Scout Leadership Experience gives girls like Luz the confidence and tools to lead. "That is our commitment to girls across Abilene and the surrounding area: to provide leadership experiences that help each girl discover who she can be and what she can do," said Girl Scouts if Texas Oklahoma Plains leaders. "We need more adult volunteers to support our work so we can reach more girls and give them the confidence to stand tall."
For more information about joining Girl Scouts or for those who would like to help the Girl Scouts develop the next generation of women leaders, contact the Abilene Girl Scout office at 888-670-0432.
The Girl Scouts will also have a pre-game parade that begins at 5:45 p.m. The game starts at 7:05 p.m. at the Texas Rangers Ballpark, 1000 Ballpark Way in Arlington.
Girl Scouts of Texas Oklahoma Plains serves 23,823 girls and 8,792 adult volunteers each year in 81 counties from Fort Worth up through the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles. The council has area service centers located in Abilene, Amarillo, Fort Worth, Lubbock and Wichita Falls. Founded in 1912, Girl Scouts of the USA is the leading authority on girls’ healthy development and builds girls of courage, confidence and character, who make the world a better place.
