Local athletes shine on 1st day of state track meet
AUSTIN — All three state qualifiers from Nolan County earned medals at the UIL high school track and field championships Friday, and one of them — Jayci Shelton of Sweetwater — medaled in both of her events. All that was missing was a first-place gold medal. Still, it was a banner day for all three and especially so for Shelton, who won a second-place silver in the Class 3A girls 100-meter hurdles (14.45) and third-place bronze in the 300-meter hurdles (44.19). Shelton was fifth in the latter event a year ago. This time she was just .02 seconds behind the 14.43 winning time by Jessica Green of Liberty Hill in the 100 hurdles, and just .02 seconds behind second-place Trianna McCalister of Monahans in the 300 hurdles.Another returning state qualifier, Caden Smith of Roscoe, won a silver medal in the Class 1A boys discus with a throw of 167 feet, 7 inches. Two years ago as a sophomore, Smith — a three-time state qualifier — won a third-place bronze medal in both the discus and shot put. He competed in the shot put on Saturday. It was a satisfying first day for Smith, even though he finished well behind firstplace Austin Cook of Overton (176-5).That’s because Smith failed to medal in either the discus or shot put at the 2010 meet after placing fourth in both events.Callie Sandusky of Highland, mean-while, also came away with a silver medal after clearing 5-2 Friday in the Class 1A girls high jump. Like Shelton, it was her first state medal, but it came in her first state appearance.Sandusky had the same height as three others, but received second place behind Natalie Alexander of Malakoff Crossroads due to the fewest misses. She attempted to equal her school record-tying 5-4 jump set at regionals, but couldn’t duplicate it.FRIDAY’S LOCALRESULTSCLASS 3A GIRLS100-meter hurdles — 1. Jessica Green, Liberty Hill, 14.43; 2.
