Lions take advantage of mistakes to beat S’water

March 31, 2011

Sweetwater’s Connor Stafford gets ready to take a throw while Tyler Edwards of Brownwood advances to third base in Wednesday’s game at Newman Park.

A malfunction with the lights at the Newman Park high school field prevented Sweetwater from playing its District 5-3A baseball game against Brownwood Tues-day night.
But when the game was finally played Wednesday, it was a different kind of Sweetwater malfunction that helped the Lions leave town with a 9-2 victory.
Four Mustang errors al-lowed Brownwood (2-0 in district) to score seven un-earned runs off Sweetwater pitcher Kris Mayes, who took the loss despite strik-ing out 12 in seven innings as his team fell to 0-2 in district and 10-12-1 overall.
Brownwood led only 3-1 until the fifth, when the Lions added four tallies on three hits, scoring the first two runs after a Mustang throwing error. Two more errors in the sixth inning allowed Brownwood to increase its lead to 9-1 until Sweetwater — which had just five hits off Lions hur-ler James Crow — scored a run off reliever Vance McShan in the seventh.
Sterling Reeves led off the seventh with a triple for the Mustangs, and scored on a passed ball before the Lions got the final out.
After a first-inning error opened the door for Brown-wood to take a 2-0 lead, Sweetwater got a run back when Tanner Crain doubled, went to third on an infield grounder and scored on Ryan Linebaugh’s single.
Brownwood shares the district lead with Snyder, which visits Sweetwater at 7 p.m. on Friday.
