A talented Brownwood boys team came to Mustang Gym and picked up its first District 5-3A victory by defeating Sweetwater, 72-45, on Friday.
The Lions (1-1 in district) led just 14-13 after the first quarter, but took control by launching a 27-11 run in the second period, allowing Brownwood to enjoy a 41-24 lead at intermission.
Taylor Jones scored 16 points and Paxton Kelley had 15 for Sweetwater, and the Mustangs got off to a good start, leading 13-10 late in the first quarter after a Jones basket.
Sweetwater’s lead, how-ever, was gone by the end of the period as Brownwood scored the next 16 points for a 26-13 advantage.
The Lions held double-digit leads from then on, but Sweetwater (0-3 district, 6-17) was still able to keep the game respectable in the third quarter as Kel-ley cut it to 49-37 in the final minute of the period.
“We kind of went haywire for awhile in the second quarter and that allowed them to jump out on us, but then we fought back,” said coach Al Hunt of his team, which currently has only seven players on its varsity roster. “They present problems for us because they’re so athletic, but our kids kept plugging out there.”
Gabe Medellin scored six points, Dylon Adames four and Tino Martinez and Ryan Mercer two for Sweetwater, which goes to Snyder (0-2 in district) on Tuesday.
