The big games aren’t here yet, but the Sweetwater girls basketball team is starting to get used to winning.
The Lady Mustangs picked up their fourth straight victory on Tuesday at Mustang Gym, pulling away in the second half to beat Lamesa 64-46 and improving their season record to 10-8.
The 64 points — 40 coming in the second half — were a season high for the team, which won its last three games at the Stanton tourney over the weekend for the consolation title.
Alicia Finn had 21 points to pace the Lady Mustangs, who held just a one-point advantage (24-23) over Lamesa at halftime. Sweet-water took control in the third period, outscoring the Golden Tornadoes 20-5 for a 44-28 lead, and led by at least 11 the rest of the way. Kinsey Browning hit a pair of 3s in the final 1:39 of the third quarter to spark an 8-0 flourish and finished with 14 points while Taylor McKoy had 13 for Sweetwa-ter, which hosts Ballinger this Friday. Kendra Crosson had six, Suede Shirley and Candice Hernandez four and Aubra Hendrix two to complete the scoring.
“The kids are playing well right now,” Sweetwater coach Jerry McSherry said.
Sweetwater made it a girls sweep Tuesday as the fresh-men won 43-27 and the JV came out on top 42-24.
Shaneese Brown had 16 points, Micaela Reschman seven, Sydney Vanderbilt six, Kayla Chowning five, Larissa Locklar four, Taylor McPherson three and Alexis Williams two for the fresh-men. Janell Walker had 15 points, Kelsi Crosson eight, Kathleen Campbell and Elise Lawrence six, Shelby Cason three and Whitnee Murff and Destiny Osteen two for the JV girls.
