Lady Stangs crush Crane

March 26, 2011

It was a non-district game against a Class 2A opponent. Still, Friday’s 19-4 romp against Crane at Jerry Collins Complex was a very impressive way for the Sweetwater softball team to begin a five-game homestand.
The 19 runs represented the Lady Mustangs’ highest output of the year, and they needed less than four full innings to amass their total — as well as get 13 hits — against Crane.
Kendra Crosson had three doubles, two of them in the first inning when Sweetwater scored 10 runs and sent 15 batters to the plate. Her twin, Kelsi Crosson, had a double and triple. Taylor McKoy had three hits, including a two-run homer, while batting from both sides of the plate, and she and courtesy runner Morgan Runge stole three bases.
After its big 10-run first inning, Sweetwater added four runs in the third and five in the fourth until the game was stopped with Sweetwater ahead 19-4.
Crane did its only scor-ing damage in a four-run third inning, when the Lady Birds took advantage of four walks, hit batter, a bases-loaded double and an error to cut Sweetwater’s lead to 10-4 before the Lady Mustangs responded with nine more tallies in the third and fourth. Maty Montgomery, meanwhile, pitched all four innings and allowed Crane just one hit to get the victory.
Sweetwater is also home for its next four district games, starting Tuesday against Brownwood at 7 p.m. The Lady Mustangs end the week by hosting Snyder, with Big Spring and Wylie both coming to town next week.
Sweetwater is currently in third place in district at 1-1. Brownwood leads at 2-0, while Snyder is 2-1, Big Spring is 1-2 and Wylie is 0-2.
