February 7, 2013

The deadline to enter the Sweetwater Jaycees Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship pageant is 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17.

The annual Sweetwater Jaycees Miss Snake Charmer Scholarship Pageant is a time where young ladies from throughout the Big Country come together to compete for scholarship money. At last year's pageant, the theme for the night was Wings Across America in honor of the WASP (Women Airforce Service Pilots).
The annual pageant will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday, March 7, at the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium. The pageant is open to all girls between the ages of 16-19 who live within a 75 mile radius of Sweetwater.
This year, the Jaycees have increased the total amount in scholarship money available to the winners from $2,500 to $3,500. A total of $1,500 will be awarded to Miss Snake Charmer while $850 will be presented to the first runner-up. The second runner-up will receive $650 and the talent competition winner will receive $500.
Applications are currently available at local high schools or by contacting Carolyn Mullican at 725-3043 or 235-4943 after 5 p.m. or Laura Gilbert at 235-1524 or 338-2713.
The deadline to enter the pageant is 1 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 17. The annual pageant tea will also be held Feb. 17, beginning at 2 p.m. at Java Jax, located at 325 Oak Street in Sweetwater.
The competitions will include talent, evening gown and casual wear this year. Prior to the pageant, contestants will be involved in several events and practices.
Beginning Friday, Feb. 22, the contestants will be part of the annual media day at 9 a.m.
During the pageant, Sweetwater High School junior Kayla Chowning, daughter of Wayne and Ann-G Chowning, will turn the title over to the new Miss Snake Charmer.
