Blackwell's Jayden Jones

HIGHLAND — Facing its in-county six-man rival, Highland cruised to its fifth straight victory on Friday as the hosting Hornets beat the visiting Hornets from Blackwell by a final score of 54-22.
Highland (5-2) ripped off seven straight touchdowns and scored the last 42 points of the first half to take con-trol after Blackwell’s Jay-den Jones gave his team an early 6-0 lead with a 66-yard run. Highland scored two touchdowns before the first quarter ended to take a 14-6 lead over Blackwell, then added 28 more to lead 42-6 at halftime. Highland added another touchdown to make it 48-6 at the end of three periods, but Blackwell pre-vented the game from end-ing prematurely by scoring twice in the fourth quarter.
Highland’s Michael Hyde, Shelby Howard and Ron Covington ran for a combined six TDs. A 5-yard run by Gaga Soedarsono and Covington’s 10-yard interception return produced the other scores. Howard had three TD runs, two on 1-yard plunges plus a 27-yarder; Hyde had TD runs of 25 and 1 yard; and Covington also struck paydirt on a 22-yard run in the fourth quarter. Hyde also kicked three ex-tra points for Highland.
Blackwell (3-4) finished with 238 yards rushing to Highland’s 362. Jones also scored in the fourth quarter on a 49-yard run followed by Truston Cox’s extra point, and Franck Cano got the other TD on a 9-yard run followed by Cox’s PAT.
Howard also recovered two fumbles for Highland and Covington one.
Neither team had a lot of success through the air. Highland was 3-of-7 for 34 yards, and Blackwell was 2-of-8 for nine yards.
