The Highland and Roscoe girls were big winners on the court in District 13-A, Division II basketball action Friday as they won by 54 and 49 points, respectively, against outmatched foes.
The Highland and Roscoe boys, however, lost games by a total of seven points.
Just how dominant have the Highland girls been in district play so far? The Lady Hornets ended the first half of the schedule Friday with an average winning margin of more than 41 points.
Highland led 26-0 after one quarter, 42-3 at half-time and 60-12 after three periods against Hermleigh as they improved to 22-3 overall and 5-0 in district.
Four players made it into double figures as Sierra Allen scored 19 points, Madison Moseley 13, Beth Richburg 12 and Hannah Allen 10. Sydny Helbert had six points, Stephanie Ashford four, Lora Stewart and Morgan Monroe three and Kelsi Johns two for the Lady Hornets.
Roscoe 72, Loraine 23
By beating Loraine, the Roscoe girls (3-2, 14-10) moved into a second-place tie and ended a two-game losing streak. Roscoe is tied with both Westbrook and Ira for the No. 2 spot.
Roscoe led 14-9 after one quarter and 35-20 at half-time, then completely shut down Loraine in the second half â allowing just three points over that span.
Roscoe had three players in double figures â Carolina Perez with 18 points, Shel-by Brown with 17 and Faith Boren with 16 â against Loraine. Olivia Saddler scored eight points, Mirian Solis five, Olivia Rovig four, Sam Ortega three and Whitney Williams one.
Hermleighâs boys are tied with Highland (2-1, 8-12) for second place in the district after Fridayâs win.
Both teams are a game behind first-place Ira, which is 3-0 after winning Friday.
Highland led 8-7 after one quarter, but it was 14-14 at halftime and Hermleigh was ahead 28-20 after three periods before holding off Highlandâs late rally.
Highland was paced by Ron Covington and Jacob Richburg with 10 points. Michael Hyde had six, Ethan Wilson five, Brandon Stevens three and and Kevin Box two.
Roscoe 45 (OT)
The Roscoe boysâ bid for their first district win fell just short as Loraine outscored the Plowboys 8-4 in overtime to improve to 1-2 in district play, while also pulling out of a tie with Roscoe (0-3) for last place.
Loraine jumped out to a 12-6 lead after one quarter, but the second stanza saw Roscoe cut the lead to 21-20 at halftime.
Loraine led 32-28 after three periods, only to see Roscoe tie it at 41 at the end of regulation.
Jesus Leanos led Roscoe by scoring 19 points.
Also scoring for the Plow-boys were Kevin Lavalais and Shelton Toliver with six, Matthew Davila with five, Javier Leanos with three and Brant Burnett, Dillon Freeman and Luke Rovig with two.
