The Highland girls won all four of their games this past weekend to capture the title at Bronteâ€™s tournament.
Highland (9-2) had little trouble beating any of its opponents at the round-robin event. After routing Hamlin 56-30 on Thursday, the Lady Hornets knocked off Miles 55-28 on Friday and then completed the tournament by whipping Bronte (40-14) and Winters (57-19) on Saturday.
Sierra Allen and Beth Richburg each had 16 points vs. Miles, and Allen was also the leading scorer against Bronte (13 points) and Win-ters (22 points). Highland has won seven straight after a 2-2 start to the season.
Roscoeâ€™s girls (6-3) won third place at Robert Leeâ€™s tournament by defeating the host team 55-24 on Sat-urday after losing to Color-ado City 36-28 in Fridayâ€™s semifinals. Eva Aguayo had 19 points against Robert Lee while Carolina Perez, who made the all-tournament team, had nine points for the Plowgirls agaomst Colorado City.
Roscoeâ€™s boys lost 60-44 in the consolation finals on Saturday and also lost to Eldorado 48-44 on Friday. The Plowboys also lost to Eden, 59-32, in Thursdayâ€™s opening game. Jesus Leanos scored 22 points in Fridayâ€™s game and Cutter Davila had 14 points on Saturday.
Meanwhile, both the host Blackwell girls and boys placed fourth at Blackwellâ€™s Oak Creek Classic which wrapped up Saturday. Also playing in the tournament were the Highland boys, who beat Blackwell 35-24 on Saturday to capture third place honors at the tourna-ment: and the Highland JV girls, who lost 60-19 in Saturdayâ€™s consolation final to Rotan.
Blackwellâ€™s girls started out by getting their first win of the year over Loraine, 48-22, on Thursday to reach the tournament semifinals on Friday before losing to Jayton, 58-30, and then falling to Hermleigh 54-32 in the third-place game. Jayton won the championship by beating Paint Rock 49-26 on Saturday.
Blackwellâ€™s boys also lost their last two after also getting their first win by beating Loraine 39-27 Thurs-day. The Hornets lost to Jayton, 56-39, in Fridayâ€™s semifinals and then lost in Saturdayâ€™s third-place game with Highland, which led 15-10 at halftime and 19-16 after three periods before pulling away late to win by a double-digit margin.
Highland beat Paint Rock 29-25 on Thursday and then lost 49-30 to Hermleigh, the eventual champion, before defeating Blackwell on Saturday to win third place. Highlandâ€™s JV girls lost to Paint Rock 26-16, but beat Panther Creek 28-15 to reach the consolation final against Rotan.
Three area players were named to all-tournament teams. Leonor Castelo of Blackwell was the only area girls player to make the team, while Blackwellâ€™s Mason Magness and High-landâ€™s Ron Covington were both named for the boys.
Hermleigh won the boys title by defeating Jayton, 37-34, on Saturday. Also, Rotan beat Paint Rock 50-26 to win the consolation title after earlier defeating Loraine, 33-31, on Friday. Paint Rock defeated Panther Creek, 54-40, in its semifinal. Rotanâ€™s girls, meanwhile, overwhelmed Loraine 54-7 to reach their consolation final.
Highlandâ€™s teams will be the host teams starting on Thursday for their annual Hilltop Classic that will run through Saturday. Also playing in the tournament will be the Roscoe boys and girls and Blackwellâ€™s boys and girls.
On Tuesday, Highlandâ€™s girls go to Albany while the boys are at Irion County.
Also Tuesday, Roscoeâ€™s girls and boys are at Trent while Blackwellâ€™s teams will host Westbrook.
Blackwellâ€™s girls will be the first area team to start district play when they open up a week from Tuesday at Veribest.
