Lady Stangs volleyball continues district play

The Sweetwater volleyball team still clings to playoff hopes after beating Snyder in three games Friday at Mustang Gym.
In addition to winning for the 23rd time this season, the Lady Mustangs (23-14) are now 3-4 in District 4-3A after dispatching Snyder for the second time this season by scores of 25-20, 25-19 and 25-17. Snyder is 21-14 overall, but 0-6 in district.
However, Sweetwater got no help in its postseason bid as Monahans beat Greenwood on Friday to improve to 5-2 in district. That means Sweetwater will likely have to win its last three matches of the season to have any shot at a playoff and the Lady Mustangs still have to play 5-2 Big Spring and 7-0 Wylie.
Sweetwater was able to take care of business efficiently for the most part against Snyder, as the team weathered several mini-dry spells to finish strong in all three games.
Sweetwater trailed 13-11 in Game 1 but put together a 9-2 run to seize control and finished with a 5-2 run. In Game 2, Sweetwater led just 17-16 until an 8-3 finishing run, and was up just 18-15 in Game 3 until ending with a 7-2 run against Snyder.
Sweetwater changed its lineup during the match due to a lack of kills from the right side, coach Liz Miller said. “We were trying to spread our offense out,” she said. “There were a couple of balls that hit the ground that frustrated me, but part of that was adjusting to the changes. Our effort wasn’t bad. This was a win that we needed to have.”
Kendra Crosson had 10 kills while Kathleen Camp-bell, Shelby Cason and Kel-si Crosson had seven each. Kendra Crosson had 14 digs, Suede Shirley 12, Kelsi Crosson 11, Kayla Chowning seven and Campbell six.Shirley also served up 32 kill assists.
Sweetwater is back on the road to face Big Spring on Tuesday, before the team comes home to finish out the season against Green-wood and Wylie.
