LUBBOCK — Sweetwater wasted no time at all getting untracked at Lubbock Estacado Tuesday when playing its first softball game in seven days, and next-to-last in non-district play.
The Lady Mustangs scored nine first-inning runs, cruising to a 13-1 win as they improved to 10-4-1 overall. The game ended after 4 1/2 innings due to the mercy rule.
Sweetwater had just four hits but also six walks and a hit batter in its nine-run first inning.
Seven of the runs scored with two outs. The big hits were a two-run triple by Elli Lehnert, a two-run double by Bri Moriel and a two-run single by Sonora Medellin.
Kaci Webb was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the first run, and Tavis Black made it 2-0 when she drew a bases-loaded walk.
With two outs, Annisa McCollom stole home for the third run and the triple by Lehnert scored Webb and Black.
Lehnert doubled in the second to score Black, who singled. In the third inning, McCollom singled to score Moriel. In the fifth inning, Sweetwater added a pair of runs on an error and RBI grounder by McCollom.
Medellin and Lehnert had three hits to pace the offense. Moriel, Blake Bewley, McCollom and Black also hit safely. Moriel scored three runs while Bewley, Medellin and Black scored twice. McCollom, Webb, Lehnert and Sadie Fish also scored for Sweetwater.
Lehnert was the winning pitcher for the Lady Mustangs, allowing three hits and striking out 10 with no walks. Sweetwater will host Andrews at 5 p.m. Friday.
