The Gay Young Art Show was originally scheduled to open on January 13, 2018. Due to delayed construction on the Jo and Tom Henderson Room, the Art Show has been postponed to June 2018. An exact date will be announced closer to the event.
The Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium Board assumed management of the lower floor of the former police department when it was vacated February 2016. Tom Henderson had given the Auditorium a major gift prior to his death in 2016 with $50,000 committed to the Auditorium space and $50,000 committed to renovation of the south wing for art shows and after concert receptions. The plans were officially announced at an Art Show by Pat Hawley, local artist who specializes in turning trash to treasure. Engineers and SMA Board members Richard Smola and Larry Ludlum created plans and began the process of opening the Auditorium to the south annex. They had non-weight bearing walls removed. The Board approved the east side of the space for a permanent Municipal Band Hall and the foyer and west side for renovation for art and social gatherings.
Mondel Rogers agreed to donate his expertise as artist and architect. His reputation not only insures an aesthetic and elegant end result, but helped secure donations and grant funding. The kitchen space is going to be functional and beautiful.
