Free Trout Derby Reels in Family Fun

The City of Abilene and the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department will be co-sponsoring the Trout Derby this year on February 17. The free event is fun for the whole family and will run from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.
The Trout Derby will take place at the Neighborhood Fishin’ Program site at Grover Nelson Park’s Small Pond. Trout stockings began in late November and will continue through March. Over 500 trout will be stocked in the back pond. The Small Pond is located at 1000 Zoo Lane in Abilene. Event participants will be able to participate in fishing education activities that will include fish identification, baiting a hook, casting do’s and don’t’s, knot tying,  as well as fishing for rainbow trout from the pond. The event will include fishing, fish identification, knot tying, casting do’s and don’t’s, and more.
There will be giveaways for kids. While some bait will be provided by The Lake Store – Ft. Phantom Hill Reservoir, loaner tackle and bait for youth will be in limited supply.
Those interested are asked to please bring their equipment. Any participants 17 years or older must have a valid Texas fishing license. All statewide regulations will be enforced at this event.
