Recap of Friday’s opening day of the Region II-1A, Division II track meet

SAN ANGELO — Athletes from Blackwell and High-land claimed the top three spots in the boys pole vault on Friday’s opening day of the Region II-1A, Division II track meet, and all three of them may go to state.
Blackwell’s Jayden Jones, who won the event with a leap of 13 feet, one inch, and Highland’s Michael Hyde — who was second with a leap of 12-9 — are assured of a trip to Austin for the state meet that will be held on May 10-11. However, Blackwell’s Mason Magness may join them after he fin-ished third on Friday with a leap of 12-3.
So might Jesus Leanos of Roscoe, who was third in the boys 3200-meter run with a time of 10:29.34.
The latter two athletes will have to wait until all regional meets in the state have been completed to see if their performances will earn them a wild-card entry trip to Austin.
Also earning points on Friday in regional events were Stephanie Metcalf of Blackwell, fifth in the girls long jump (16-4 1/4); and Roscoe’s Landon Jones, who was sixth in the boys discus (128-11 1/2).
All of the athletes except Hyde named above had a chance to compete in at least one other event on Saturday, as well as many others from Nolan County. A story with complete local results for the Region II-1A meet and the Region I-3A meet involving Sweetwater will run in Monday’s paper.
