Decision just days away on new football coach and AD
A replacement for Shane Mobley, whose last day as Sweetwater High School’s athletic director and head football coach was Tuesday, could be announced within the next few days.
So says superintendent Terry Pittman, who is heading up a six-person committee that has narrowed a list of candidates to replace Mobley down to nine finalists who are being interviewed this week.
Pittman said Tuesday the last of those finalists would be interviewed today. Once that process is completed, he said a final decision on Mobley’s replacement could come as soon as this weekend. However, Pittman said the announcement may wait until the Sweetwater ISD board of trustees holds its monthly meeting on Thursday, Feb. 23.
The SISD office received a total of 106 applications after advertising the dual positions for a three-week period starting Jan. 13.
Two days earlier, Mobley announced that he was leaving Class 4A, Division II Sweetwater, after compiling a 46-16 record in five seasons and guiding the 2016 team to a 13-2 record and a trip to the state championship game for only the third time in school history. He begins his new duties today at Sealy, a Class 4A, Division I school with a similarly rich football tradition, which is located about 50 miles west of Houston.
The SISD committee which has interviewed the nine finalists since this past Friday includes Pittman, SHS principal Dr. Ron Morris, girls athletic director Rusty Rainbolt and SISD board members Leah Andrews, Neal Hoover and Mark Meneses.
Pittman declined to immediately release the names of the persons chosen as the nine finalists. He did say, however, that he hoped to have Mobley’s replacement on the job at Sweetwater by the first two weeks of March.
