Blackwell, Highland fall in 6-man district openers

Nolan County’s six-man teams lost district openers on the road Friday. In District 7, Division I, High-land lost to Rotan, 76-62, as the Hornets’ five-game winning streak ended. In District 8, Division II, No. 6 Robert Lee broke a 30-30 deadlock after three quarters with a pair of fourth-quarter scores to beat Blackwell 46-36.
Highland (5-3) equalled its second-best point total, but Rotan had at least 12 points in all four quarters and never trailed as the Yellowhammers (1-7) got their first-ever six-man win. Highland’s Ron Covington threw TD passes of 20 and 14 yards to Gaga Soedarso-no, while Jacob Richburg and Ethan Wilson threw scoring passes of 9 and 11 yards, respectively. Rich-burg’s pass went to Shelby Howard and Wilson’s was caught by Michael Hyde.
Highland finished with 404 total yards. Covington had scoring runs of 4 and 2 yards and also scored on a 72-yard kickoff return for the Hornets. Also, Wilson had a 5-yard TD run and Howard found paydirt on a 1-yard run, while Hyde hit four PATs. Howard ran for 131 yards, Hyde 83, Coving-ton 59 and Wilson 46 as the Hornets finished with 312 yards rushing. Top defenders were Howard (seven tackles, fumble recovery), Wilson (five tackles, two interceptions) and Coving-ton (fumble recovery).
Blackwell (3-5) tied Rob-ert Lee in the third quarter on a 68-yard pass from Ethan Andrews to Mark Monroe and a Trustan Cox extra point kick to make it 30-30 with 1:51 left. But Robert Lee ran off 16 points in the fourth quarter to go up 46-30, and held on as the Hornets could manage only one more score on a 55-yard run by Jayden Jones. Andrews also threw a 43-yard TD pass to Ted Chambliss in the third quarter, and finished with 130 yards passing on just five completions. In addition to the two TD throws, he also completed three passes for 19 yards to Jones.
Blackwell had 346 total yards in the game. Jones (137 yards rushing) also had a 22-yard touchdown run in the first quarter that helped the Hornets tie the game at 8-8, and Cody Shamblin had a 2-yard TD run in the second quarter. Cox kicked three PATs. Franck Cano had 53 yards rushing, Mon-roe 14 and Shamblin nine as the Hornets ran for 216 in all. Top tacklers were Jones (10), Mason Magness (seven) and Chambliss and Kaleb Edwards (five each).
