Thanks to a second-place finish in the 148-pound weight class, Donald Baker is advancing to Abilene where he will represent the Sweetwater boys at the state powerlifting meet later this month.
Bakerâ€™s total lift in the three categories â€” squat, bench press and dead lift â€” at the regional meet held Saturday at Sundown High School was 1,085 pounds.
Baker, a senior, will be making his first appear-ance at the state meet.
Just missing out on a trip to the state meet with third-place finishes were Jay Lomas (910) in the 132-pound class and Austin Marlett (1,090) in the 165-pound class. Lomas actu-ally tied for the second-best total but lost a chance to advance due to a slightly higher body weight than that of Greenwoodâ€™s Cole Byerly, who was awarded the second-place regional medal in the weight class.
Both Lomas and Marlett will be state alternates by placing third.
Also, Kendall Rea (1,210) was fifth for Sweetwater in the 242-pound class and Steven Le (1,025) finished sixth in the 165-pound weight class. Trey Harvey also went to regionals in the 148-pound class but did not make weight.
This yearâ€™s boys state meet will be March 23.
Roscoe had two athletes at the Region I, Div. 3 meet in Sundown.
Jose Rangel placed third for Roscoe in the 165-pound class and is a state alternate after a lift of 1,165 pounds. Landon Jones also competed in the 181-pound class but did not score.
Sweetwaterâ€™s six athletes competed Saturday at the Region I, Division 2 meet in Sundown.
