On Thursday, Sweetwa-terâs Mustangs began 2013 by beating Coahoma for their sixth straight win. And as the final 66-37 score will attest, it wasnât close.
Kaleb Hoover poured in 19 points while Dylan Ben-nett added 10, Michael Hunt nine and Isaiah McGee eight for the 10-7 Mustangs, who havenât lost since Dec. 14. The 29-point win was the most lopsided of the season. Coahoma scored just 10 points in the second half of Thursdayâs game at Mus-tang Gym after Sweetwater led by nine points, 36-27, over the Bulldogs at inter-mission. Coahoma was held scoreless from the field in the second half until the 5:01 mark of the fourth period and by then Sweetwater â which lost to Coahoma 70-66 in overtime without three key players back in early December â had an insurmountable 56-33 lead. The lead reached 31 (66-35) on a free throw by Michael Hunt with 48 seconds left.
All 11 players who suited up against Coahoma scored for Sweetwater. Jack Poe, who like Hunt hit a pair of treys, finished with six points and Deandre Gatson five. Cole Maxwell, Sean Morrow, Quentin Wetsel and Rhett Torres had two points and Trey Taylor one.
Sweetwater will travel to San Angelo Lake View on Tuesday to end non-district play and opens district by hosting Monahans a week from today.
âThis was a good win for us. We played well across the board,â said head coach Al Hunt. âWhatâs helped us is that weâre playing solid defense right now. This was a good team win.â
Sweetwaterâs 10 victories equal its total for all of last season, when the Mustangs finished the year with an overall mark of 10-21.
