Mustang Football Camp set next week

A Mustang Football Camp will be held July 23-25 at Mustang Bowl from 8-11 a.m. daily for students entering grades 3-9.
The cost of the camp is $30, and all campers will receive individual instruction from members of the Mustang coaching staff. The camp will place emphasis on skills and drills and will also have both punt, pass and kick instruction and competitions. There will also be refreshments, T-shirts and certificates.
Checks should be made payable to Sweetwater High School.

Jump Rope Camp set for August

Jump Rope Camp is August 4-6, for students completing grades Kindergarten through fourth. Third and fourth graders will attend from 9 a.m. to noon and Kindergarten through second graders will attend from 1-3 p.m. Camp will be held at the Sweetwater Intermediate School gym. Volleyball camp slated for Aug. 6-8

A volleyball camp will be held Aug. 6-8 at the Sweetwater Middle School gym for students who are entering grades 4-8. The camp will be held each day at the gym, located on 305 Lamar Street, from 4-6:30 p.m. A fee will be charged and includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration is greatly appreciated. A concession stand will be open for snacks and drinks. The goal of this year’s camp is to improve players’ skills in volleyball for the upcoming season with instruction through games and fun. SW eliminated at state 7-on-7 tourney

COLLEGE STATION — The regular season is still several weeks away. However, this past week proved Sweetwater could hold its own with the big boys in 7-on-7 football action at the highest level.
Sweetwater finished with a 2-2 record after losing, 39-33, to Tyler Chapel Hill in double overtime in a first round championship bracket game at the Texas 7-on-7 Championships that was played Friday morning.

Sweetwater in championship bracket at state 7-on-7 tourney

COLLEGE STATION — Sweetwater went 2-1 Thursday, beating Cuero and Boerne in pool play at the Texas 7-on-7 Championships after an opening loss to Gilmer as the team advanced to play Tyler Chapel Hill this morning in the first round of the championship bracket that is single-elimination.
Sweetwater bounced back from a 36-20 loss to Gilmer on Thursday to beat Cuero 27-20 and Boerne 35-33 and advance into today’s championship bracket. Only Gilmer (3-0) had a better pool record; Boerne was 1-2 and Cuero 0-3. Sweetwater needed four more wins to reach today’s championship game at 3:30 p.m.

SW will begin play at 7-on-7 state tournament Thursday

Several Sweetwater High School football players will be spending Thursday and Friday in College Station making history — as part of the school’s first-ever group to play in the state 7-on-7 tournament.
Sweetwater qualified with a top-two finish last month at Stephenville’s state qualifying tournament.

All-state honoree

James Clift, a 2014 grad-uate of Sweetwater High School and former SHS athlete, has been named by the Texas High School Baseball Coaches Associ-ation to its Class 3A academic all-state team.
The honor is given to high school seniors who main-tained an overall grade-point average of 93 or above for their four years of high school, and who were members in good standing of their team at the time of nomination and of good moral character.
Clift was the only baseball player in Sweet-water’s district (4-3A) to receive THSBCA academic all-state honors.

Junior Leaguers are eliminated as Wylie rallies for 4-2 victory

The Junior League all-stars from Sweetwater must have felt like it was deja vu all over again at the end of their District 5 losers bracket game against Wylie on Wednesday.
For the second straight game, and second time in three days, Sweetwater was three outs away from a win that would have put them in the District 5 title game.
But those dreams were dashed for a second straight time Wednesday as Wylie, trailing 2-1 entering the top of the seventh, pushed over three runs in its final at bat and held off Sweetwater in the bottom of the frame to leave with a 4-2 victory.
