‘Roos hold on to win finale

The Mustangs showed up at the Bowl again on Satur-day, and almost completed an amazing rally.
But Weatherford, after nearly blowing a 24-point second half lead, finally dis-covered some late magic as the Kangaroos rebounded to defeat Lubbock Coronado — like Sweetwater, known as the Mustangs — in a high-scoring, thrilling Family RV Sammy Baugh Classic finale by a score of 50-38.

Mustangs run wild in opener

On Friday, Sweetwater’s football players seemed to be delivering a message for all those people who might have missed their scrimmages against San Angelo Lake View and Clyde, or for other reasons might not be aware of their abliities.
The message: Hey guys, we can score points. Any time. Anywhere. And you better be ready for us.

Blackwell, Roscoe open the season by losing road contests

The Roscoe and Blackwell football teams began their seasons on the road Friday and find the going tough.
The Plowboys were beaten 46-14 at Hawley, while Blackwell fell 38-24 at Ster-ling City.

S’water runners begin at Christoval

Sweetwater High School’s cross country runners went to Christoval on Thursday for their first meet of 2014.
The Sweetwater boys finished sixth out of the 10 teams and the Sweetwater girls were ninth out of the 11 teams in their division.

GC outscores Haskell in game called at halftime

August 29, 2014

Grape Creek held a 26-16 halftime lead against Has-kell at halftime of Thurs-day’s opener of the 10th annual Family RV Sammy Baugh Classic. But as they prepared for the second half, Mother Nature got in the way of more football.
After players and fans scurried for cover and fol-lowing a one-hour wait, the game was suspended due to dangerous lightning that hit the area right as the third quarter was about to start.

Highland, MC cancel after lightning strikes

Highland’s season open-er against Motley County at Jayton’s Gridiron Classic was cancelled Thursday at the 4:14 mark of the first quarter because of the lightning which struck the area.

LHS offers big test for S’water

It’s been two decades since Sweetwater has met up with a Class 5A school on the football field.
The Mustangs, however, will get that challenge at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they host Lubbock High in their season opener at the 10th annual Family RV Sammy Baugh Classic.

Highland will begin its season today vs. Matadors

August 28, 2014

Highland will be the first area football team to start play tonight. The Hornets will face Motley County in their first game as a 1A team at 6 p.m. to begin Jayton’s three-day Gridiron Classic.
The teams played a thril-ler last year, the Matadors winning 62-59 to start the year. Tonight is the debut for Kyle Jeffrey, who coached at Highland 10 years ago as an assistant, as head coach.
