Sweetwater was the lone Nolan County football team to come away with a season-opening victory, but Roscoe, Highland and Blackwell all hope to jump into the win column this weekend.

Mustangs packing to play Mules

September 4, 2014

Sweetwater came gallop-ing out of the gates to start its 2014 football season last week by thumping Lubbock High, 66-35, in one of its prolific offensive outbursts in school history.
That game was played at Sweetwater’s historic Mus-tang Bowl, which is celebra-ting its 75th anniversary this year, so a history-making win — which happened at the 10th annual Sammy Baugh Classic, no less — was perhaps fitting.

Spikers crush Colorado City

September 3, 2014

After winning Game 1 against Colorado City, the Sweetwater volleyball team began Game 2 of Tuesday’s non-district match in lack-luster fashion, at one time trailing 10-5.
Coach Liz Miller didn’t like what she was seeing. “I could tell after the first few points that we’d get beat if we didn’t take care of busi-ness,” she said of her team’s Game 2 start.

A Lubbock High defender tries to bring down Sweetwater’s T.C. Huitt in Friday’s opener at the Bowl. Sweetwater won 66-35 and will travel to Muleshoe this Friday.

Blackwell falls to Sterling City

Visiting Blackwell held a 24-12 lead over Sterling City with one quarter left in its season opener on Friday, but the Eagles came back with 26 unanswered points for a 38-24 win.

Banyard will be on Vikings’ practice squad despite having a strong preseason

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — After being released by the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings on Saturday, ex-Sweetwater High School running back Joe Banyard cleared waivers on Sunday and will join the team’s practice squad for the third straight year.

‘Roos hold on to win finale

The Mustangs showed up at the Bowl again on Satur-day, and almost completed an amazing rally.
But Weatherford, after nearly blowing a 24-point second half lead, finally dis-covered some late magic as the Kangaroos rebounded to defeat Lubbock Coronado — like Sweetwater, known as the Mustangs — in a high-scoring, thrilling Family RV Sammy Baugh Classic finale by a score of 50-38.
