JV girls win finale

The Sweetwater JV girls won 53-23 over Big Spring’s JV girls on Tuesday to fin-ish 7-3 in District 2-4A and 18-9 overall.
Texas Williams led Sweet-water’s win with 19 points while Sonora Medellin had 12 points and Jessica Poe 10. Angela Blueford had six points, Danielle Vega three, Ainsleigh Nelson two and Gewel Cherry one for the Lady Mustangs.

Highland girls set warmup

After ending its regular season Tuesday with a for-feit win over Loraine, the District 12-1A champion Highland girls basketball team has scheduled a play-off warmup game for this Saturday at 11 a.m. against Valley at Spur High School.
Highland, which has a 23-5 season record, finished 10-0 in 12-1A and was given a first-round bye. The Lady Hornets begin their playoff run late next week against the District 11-1A runnerup.

SW teams lose to Big Spring in final hoops doubleheader

Visiting teams have not had a lot of trouble adjusting to their surroundings at Sweetwater’s Mustang Gym during district play. On Tuesday, it happened again as Big Spring won both ends of a varsity basketball doubleheader by lopsided scores in preparation for the playoffs that begin later this month.

Sweetwater vs. Big Spring usually means something in terms of playoff possibilities. And that will once again be the case tonight when the teams meet up for their final basketball doubleheader of the year at Mustang Gym.

Softball signups planned

February 10, 2015

The Sweetwater Fastpitch Softball Association plans to have additional signups for the 2015 season this week for girls 5-14 years of age.
The signups will be held from 6-8 p.m. on both Tuesday, Feb. 10 and Friday, Feb. 13 at the Fourth and Elm Street Church of Christ warehouse. Please bring a copy of your daughter’s birth certificate. Girls must be five years old by Jan. 1, 2015. The cost is $75 per child. No late signups.
Persons are also asked to bring used gloves, bats, helmets, cleats, pants and belts for an equipment swap.

Opening ceremonies set

February 10, 2015

The opening ceremonies for all Sweetwater Minor League (ages 9-10 as of April 1) and Major League (ages 11-12 as of April 1) baseball players will be Saturday, Feb. 28. Opening ceremonies for all T-Ball (ages 4-6 as of Jan. 1) and Farm League (ages 7-8 as of Jan. 1) players will be held Saturday, March 7.

Tickets for SHS Football Awards Banquet are available at fieldhouse through Feb. 18

Sweetwater High School’s Football Awards Banquet is set for Monday, Feb. 23 at 6:30 p.m. at the “Center” at Texas State Technical College.
Tickets for $12 each will be available at the SHS fieldhouse until 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18. Meal tickets will not be sold at the door.

The Arizona Wildcats traveled to Tempe to face in state rival Arizona State for what they expected to be an easy game. Arizona State came into the game at the bottom of the PAC 12 at 3-6 in conference play. The Sun Devils came out firing as they shot 50% from the field (26/52) and 46.7% from 3 (7/15). Guard Bo Barnes paced the Sun Devils with 18 points including a perfect 8 for 8 from the charity stripe.

Highland now has two teams in playoffs

February 9, 2015

Highland is sending two teams to the playoffs after its boys team qualified by beating Hermleigh, 60-21, on Friday. Four players hit double figures as the Hor-nets improved to 5-2 in Dis-trict 12-1A and clinched no worse than the No. 3 spot.
