Lady Mustangs on verge of postseason after defeating Wylie

ABILENE — After scor-ing a season-high 15 runs in a key win at Big Spring three days earlier, Sweet-water again brought out the big lumber on Friday when it traveled to Wylie for the last of four straight road games in District 5-3A softball play.
And after a 10-6 win, the Lady Mustangs are on the verge of making history as just the second team to advance to postseason play since Sweetwater began playing UIL softball.

Bulldogs pull away to defeat Mustangs

ABILENE — For four in-nings of Friday’s rematch, a Sweetwater team that had lost 16-1 at home to Wylie in its District 5-3A opener stood toe-to-toe with the first-place Bulldogs.
The Mustangs even held a brief 4-1 lead after pushing across three runs in their half of the fourth inning before Wylie tied it by scor-ing three runs as well.
Unfortunately, the scor-ing pretty much ended there for Sweetwater, while Wylie was just getting started. The Bulldogs took their first lead, 8-4, with a four-run fifth and went on to a 10-5 win over the Mustangs.

SHS teams resume district action today

Sweetwater’s Kelsi Crosson is shown getting a hit in a recent district game with Big Spring. Crosson and her Lady Mustang softball teammates have a key game at Wylie at 4:30 p.m. today as they push for the program’s first playoff berth in several years. Sweetwater comes in with a 3-2 record and is in second place, while Wylie is 1-3.

Finn, Hoover receive all-BC hoop honors

Sweetwater’s Alicia Finn and Kaleb Hoover have received all-Big Country basketball recognition by the Abilene Reporter-News for Classes 3A through 5A.
Hoover, a 6-1 sophomore forward who led the Mustangs in scoring and rebounding this season, was named to the Class 3A-5A boys second team and was also chosen as the Newcomer of the Year. He burst on the scene in his first year on the Mustang varsity, averaging 16.6 points, 7.4 rebounds and two steals per game. Hoover was also named last month as the District 5-3A newcomer of the year.

Area players receive all-BC honors

The Abilene Reporter-News has given Class 1A all-Big Country high school basketball recognition to four Nolan County athletes — Jesus Leanos and Lynnsi Moses of Roscoe and Sierra Allen and Kara Hughey of Highland.
Leanos, a sophomore, is the boys newcomer of the year in Class 1A, Division I. Moses, a 5-9 senior post, made the girls second team in Class 1A, Division I after averaging 16 points, two steals and over six rebounds per game.
