Blackwell takes 1st defeat; Roscoe, Highland shut out

September 8, 2012

Tough competition on the gridiron Friday made it a rather long night for all three of Nolan County’s area football teams.
Blackwell, which was coming off its first Six-Man win on the field in nearly two years with a season-opening victory over Westbrook the previous week under new head coach Clint Lowry, was defeated 56-30 by Jayton.
Highland and Roscoe, who like Blackwell are going through the rebuilding process with several young players, were shut out on Friday. Highland lost to Sterling City by a score of 50-0, while Roscoe lost 40-0 at Irion County.

Blackwell tries for 2-0 start

September 7, 2012

Following its 54-6 home victory over Westbrook in its Six-Man opener last week, Blackwell will stay at Hornet Stadium to host Jayton as it tries for a 2-0 start at 7:30 tonight.
Jayton figures to be a tougher opponent for Blackwell after defeating Lueders-Avoca 48-0 in its opener. The Hornets, who are coming off their first on-field win in nearly two years, are ranked as a one-point underdog against the Jaybirds but should be con-fident after last week’s win.

‘Stangs try to build on their winning formula

September 6, 2012

After all the talk about its new spread offense, Sweet-water didn’t look all that different from Mustang teams of the past in last Friday’s 23-13 season-opening win over Eastland.
Of Sweetwater’s 326 total yards, 291 came by the run as the Mustangs completed just five passes.
Meanwhile, the defense gave up a lot of yards (384) but was scored on by East-land’s offense just once — with 3:34 left in the fourth quarter — even though the Mavericks took a whopping 81 snaps in the contest.

Lady ‘Stangs crush C-City

September 5, 2012

It may be too early to think about making it to the postseason in late October, but something different is happening with the 2012 Sweetwater volleyball team — it’s beating its opponents regularly and convincingly, no longer seemingly content to extend its matches by a game or two.
The latest example came Tuesday when the team finally came home from a three-week-long road swing to entertain Colorado City.

Football player of the week

September 4, 2012

Marquees Jenkins has been named as Sweet-water High School’s Football Player of the Week.
Jenkins, a 165-pound junior running back and linebacker, ran for a team-high 101 yards in season-opening 23-13 win on Friday over Eastland on just nine carries. He also had four solo tackles, five assisted tackles and one pass hurry on defense.

Blackwell rolls past Westbrook, gets first on-field win since ‘10

September 4, 2012

BLACKWELL — After failing to get a win on the field for nearly two years, Blackwell finally celebrated a victory — and a lopsided one at that — here Friday as the Hornets dominated Westbrook, 54-6, in their season opener.
Blackwell didn’t waste a lot of time taking care of the Wildcats, either, as the game was ended at halftime by Six-Man’s 45-point mer-cy rule.

Wylie jumps into 3A poll at No. 7; Stephenville 8th

September 4, 2012

Abilene Wylie replaced Argyle as the No. 7-ranked team in Class 3A in this week’s Associated Press high school football poll following a 31-14 win over the Eagles on Friday.
Wylie — unranked in the AP preseason poll — jumped ahead of preseason No. 1 Stephenville, which lost to Monterrey (Mex.) Tech 27-17 in its opener and fell seven places down to No. 8. Argyle dropped out of this week’s top 10 in 3A.
Monahans, after receiv-ing enough votes to earn a No. 14 ranking in the Class 3A preseason poll, received none this time after losing to Midland Christian 42-28 in its season opener.

I-County tops Roby

September 3, 2012

Irion County didn’t com-plete a pass, had 85 yards in penalties, committed four turnovers and its first two possessions ended with fumbles on Roby’s side of the field Saturday at the Sammy Baugh Classic.
But Roby failed to take full advantage and committed several mistakes as well that proved costly. In the end, the Hornets were able to break a 14-14 halftime tie and pull out a 30-20 win over the Lions in the season opener for both teams.

Everman routs Del Valle

September 3, 2012

Saturday’s final game of the Sammy Baugh Classic had one of the most intriguing matchups in the event’s history: a battle between a pair of perennial Class 4A playoff teams located more than 600 miles apart.
And in the first quarter alone, it had a 65-yard kickoff return to open the game plus a Classic-record 82-yard punt and a safety.
But the game ultimately proved to be onesided, as Everman easily defeated El Paso Del Valle 48-10.
