Everman routs Del Valle

September 3, 2012

Saturday’s final game of the Sammy Baugh Classic had one of the most intriguing matchups in the event’s history: a battle between a pair of perennial Class 4A playoff teams located more than 600 miles apart.
And in the first quarter alone, it had a 65-yard kickoff return to open the game plus a Classic-record 82-yard punt and a safety.
But the game ultimately proved to be onesided, as Everman easily defeated El Paso Del Valle 48-10.

Mustangs stop Mavs as Mobley wins debut

September 2, 2012

In one sense, the feeling that Sweetwater head football coach Shane Mobley had after Friday’s season-opening 23-13 win over Eastland at the Sammy Baugh Classic in Mustang Bowl was probably not a lot different from what he had felt on 40 other occasions while serving as an assistant on four playoff teams here from 2004-08 that had a combined 40-13 record.
But there were some major differences this time.

Highland falls to MC

September 2, 2012

JAYTON — A very young Highland team was unable to stay with Motley County in its season opener Friday, as the highly-regarded Matadors jumped out to a 26-6 lead after one period en route to 60-12 win.
After giving up the game’s first two touchdowns, High-land got within 12-6 when Michael Hyde scored on a 1-yard run. But the Hornets couldn’t get any closer than that as Motley County — coming off a state runnerup finish in Six-Man Division II and ranked No. 2 in this year’s preseason poll — answered with three more touchdowns before Highland could score again.

Bearcats run to 38-6 victory over Plowboys

August 31, 2012

A 38-6 season-opening loss to De Leon on Thursday at the Sammy Baugh Classic wasn’t what Roscoe was hoping for. But head coach Jonathan Haseloff still saw encouraging signs for his team, which is coming off an 0-10 season.
“I’m pleased with the way our kids performed for three quarters,” he said of his Plowboys, who trailed just 18-6 at halftime. “But when we came out in the second half we just made some awful boo-boos, being young, and we’ve got to stop doing that. But I thought we did some things well and a lot of our young kids really stepped up.”

Local 6-man teams start today

August 31, 2012

Nolan County’s two six-man Hornet football teams begin the regular season today with hopes of showing much better results than a year ago when they combined for just four victories, with one of them coming as the result of a forfeit.
Highland is facing a tough opener against Motley County at Jayton’s Gridiron Classic starting at 6 p.m. as it begins trying to improve on last year’s season that ended at 3-7. The Classic is a three-day tournament that will feature a total of seven games. Motley County was the state runnerup in Divi-sion II this past season.

Mustangs hoping for good start against Mavs

August 30, 2012

Two weather-shortened scrimmages against Wich-ita Falls Hirschi and San Angelo Lake View weren’t able to accomplish every-thing Shane Mobley had hoped. However, the first-year Sweetwater head coach still thinks his team will be ready for Friday’s season opener at the Sammy Baugh Classic against a highly regarded Eastland squad.
And Mobley knows that his players’ ability to successfully execute his new spread offense will be crucial to the final outcome.

Plowboys face Bearcats to begin Classic, season

August 30, 2012

After an 0-10 season a year ago, Roscoe head coach Jonathan Haseloff would like nothing more than for his Plowboys to win today’s 7:30 p.m. season opener against De Leon to begin the Sammy Baugh Classic.
A victory at Mustang Bowl over the Bearcats, who were 3-7 a year ago, would go a long way toward getting the program back on track to reaching the heights it has normally enjoyed.
And playing against Haw-ley’s Wing-T offense, which is similar to De Leon’s, in last week’s final scrimmage will help Roscoe know what to prepare for today.

Lady ‘Stangs win two on road

August 30, 2012

GRAHAM — Sweetwater’s Lady Mustangs won both ends of a dual match here Tuesday as it swept past Graham and Breckenridge in three games.
Sweetwater (12-7) defeated Graham 25-15, 25-16, 25-8 and beat Breckenridge 25-20, 25-15, 25-12 in two of its most dominating per-formances of the season. The Lady Mustangs will be at Frenship’s two-day tournament starting Friday.

Everman vs. Del Valle marks Classic milestone

August 29, 2012

Regardless of who wins the game, Saturday’s finale of this year’s eighth annual Sammy Baugh Classic at Mustang Bowl will mark a fairly significant milestone.
When Class 4A Everman and El Paso Del Valle meet that day at 6 p.m., it will mark the first time that two teams above the 3A level have played in the Classic, and of course, the first time they’ve played each other.
In fact, there’s been only one other team in Classic history above Class 3A that has participated.
