Mustangs at L-View for their final tuneup

With just a week left until the season opener against Eastland on Aug. 31 at the Sammy Baugh Classic, Sweetwater head football coach Shane Mobley is hop-ing to get a good evaluation of his team in today’s final scrimmage against San Angelo Lake View at the Chiefs’ stadium.
Though it will be played primarily under a controlled format, the scrimmage — which begins at approximately 6:30 p.m. after the freshman and JV teams scrimmage at 5 — will more closely resemble what fans can expect to see once the season begins.

Spikers are at S-Angelo tourney after dropping match at Seminole

The Sweetwater High School volleyball team began action at the Nita Vannoy Memorial Tourna-ment in San Angelo today after losing at Seminole in its most recent match this past Tuesday.
Sweetwater comes into the two-day tournament with a 6-5 overall record after falling to Seminole in four highly-competitive games Tuesday. The Lady Mustangs — who had also lost to Seminole in four games when the teams met in Sweetwater a week earlier — won the first game 25-19, but Seminole came back to win the last three games by nail-biting scores 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22 in claiming the match.

New Sweetwater coaches introduced

Lady Stangs back on road after placing 2nd at Canyon

The Sweetwater varsity volleyball team’s extended road swing — which contin-ues today at Seminole with a dual match against both Frenship and Seminole — has been productive so far.
The Lady Mustangs are 6-4 overall after defeating 5A Abilene Cooper 25-12, 25-22, 25-20 in Abilene on Thursday and then placing second in the Silver Bracket of Canyon Randall’s two-day tournament.

Freshmen win Sweetwater volleyball tournament

Sweetwater’s freshman volleyball team went 4-0 to win the Sweetwater tourn-ament. Sweetwater defeated Southwest Christian 25-17, 25-15; Snyder 26-24, 20-25, 25-16; Big Spring 17-25, 25-12, 25-23; and Post 25-10, 25-13 in claiming the championship.

Sweetwater offense looks sharp before weather hits

Shane Mobley didn’t get to see as much of his team as he had hoped due to lightning and rain that halted Sweetwater’s season-opening scrimmage against Wichita Falls Hirschi after 55 minutes here Saturday.
But the new Sweetwater head football coach still saw some encouraging signs when the Mustangs were on the field, especially on the offensive side of the ball.

Banyard plays 3rd exhibition contest

NEW ORLEANS — Ex-Sweetwater High and University of Texas-El Paso star Joseph Banyard, now with the New Orleans Saints, played in his third exhibition game Friday as the Saints lost to the Jack-sonville Jaguars 27-24.
Banyard, who recently signed a three-year con-tract with the Saints as a rookie free agent, finished the game with 6 yards rushing on two carries and also caught two passes for 17 yards. It was the first time Banyard had not led the team in rushing during exhibition play. Banyard has rushed for 51 yards on 14 carries and also caught four passes for 20 yards in three games.

Plowboys hold first scrimmage on new turf

Roscoe’s football team played its first of two scrimmages on Friday, when it hosted Haskell on Plowboy Field’s new turf which was installed after last season.
The scrimmage was delayed almost an hour due to threatening weather in the area but still drew a good turnout.
Also, Blackwell held its first scrimmage Friday when the Hornets traveled to Hermleigh while both Sweetwater and Highland were scheduled to hold their first scrimmages Saturday.

Mustangs get 1st test Saturday at the Bowl

After leading his players through two weeks of prac-tices and a week in pads, Shane Mobley is eager to see how his players do when they get in some licks against outside competition.
The first-year Sweetwater head football coach and his staff will finally get that chance Saturday, when the Mustangs host Wichita Falls Hirschi in their first of two preseason scrimmages.
