Local teams get little respect from TF

Once again, all four Nolan County high school teams have gotten the Rodney Dangerfield treatment in the latest edition of Dave Campbell’s Texas Football magazine, which arrived in stores late last week.
None of the four is predicted to make the playoffs out of their new districts, and one of them is picked to finish dead last.

Four SW all-star teams will compete in district tournaments this week

June 23, 2012

Sweetwater will have four Little League all-star teams competing this week in District 5 tournaments.
Pool games start Wednesday at each tournament and continue through Tuesday, July 3 for all-star teams in the 9-10, 10-11 and 11-12 year-old tournaments. The pool play for the Junior League (13-14) tournament will conclude this Saturday.

Students attend local tennis camp

These students attended a Mustang Tennis Camp held here last week and taught by new tennis coach Chris Terry. The camp was held Tuesday through Thursday, June 12-14, at the high school tennis courts.
Attending this year’s tennis camp were Kara Lehnert, Elli Lehnert, Alycia Gibson, Kierstyn Thompson, Charity Thompson, Tyler Marlett, Mia Valdez, Maura Chapman, Isabel Ortega, Grayson Chapman, Jaci McElyea, Kaylee Valdez, Keygan Valdez, Gisela Solano and Gretchen Sweek.

District 5 runnerups

Sweetwater’s Major League (ages 11-12) D’backs finished as the runnerup team after advancing to the championship game of their District 5 Little League tournament. Sweetwater beat the Snyder Braves 9-7 and Jim Ned 5-4, then lost to Dixie’s Mets 5-4.
But, they advanced as the wild card team and beat Wylie’s Rangers 11-8 to advance to the District 5 championship game for a rematch with Dixie’s Mets. However, they lost 4-3 to finish as the District 5 runnerup.

The Colorado City Rotary Club hosts its eighth annual Pat Taylor Memorial Night Golf Tournament and Steak Cookout June 30 at Colorado City’s Wolf Creek Golf Links. The entry fee for the four-person ABCD scramble will be $60 per person and includes a steak dinner for players only. Additional dinners may be purchased for $10 for adults and $6 for children 10 and under.
Cart fees are not included in the entry fee. The number of carts are limited so players are encouraged to reserve early.

Roscoe Plowboy football campers

These students posed for a group picture on the final day of the two-day Roscoe Plowboy Football Camp held last week in Roscoe. The camp for students entering grades 2-9 was taught by Roscoe head coach Jonathan Haseloff and members of Roscoe’s football coaching staff.

Mustang baseball campers

June 18, 2012

A pair of Mustang Baseball Camps were held this past week at Sweetwater High School’s baseball field which is located just south of Nolan County Coliseum.
The first session (shown) had campers entering grades 1-5 next school year while the campers in the second session was for campers entering grades 6-9 next school year. Both of the camps were taught by Sweetwater head baseball coach Roland Herrera and members of the Mustang staff.
