SHS netters to play at Andrews tourney

October 5, 2012

It’s been awhile since the Sweetwater High School tennis team has seen action due in part to the weather. But if Mother Nature permits, the team is scheduled to play at a two-day tournament in Andrews today and Saturday.
Sweetwater last played on Sept. 25 at Abilene Cooper, and played it close only to lose 11-8. Results follow:
Girls doubles — Jenny Medellin and Kristen Casto won 8-5; Gewel Cherry and Teresa Perez-Poe won 8-6; Vida Gamez and Ashley Heaton won 8-0.

V’ball teams stay on the road

October 5, 2012

Sweetwater High School’s three volleyball teams will continue a three-game road swing today when they go to Midland Greenwood, with the varsity match set to tip off at 5 p.m.
A win today will be critical to Sweetwater’s playoff hopes after the Lady Mus-tangs lost to Wylie — the No. 1 team in the state in Class 3A — on Tuesday to fall to 1-3 in District 4-3A with six games left. Greenwood is also 1-3, but is coming off its first district win Tuesday against Snyder, also the only team Sweetwater has beaten in district play.

Area football teams starting to win again

October 4, 2012

For the first time since coming to Sweetwater in 1990, your humble sports editor had no football team from Nolan County to cover in the high school playoffs this past season. In fact, there were few victories to write about as the county’s four schools won just one-fifth of their games (8-32) — and one of those was the result of a forfeit.
But there have been eight victories this season already and Sweetwater (2-3) is the only area team that hasn’t already reached or exceeded its win total for last year.
