Blue Jays are district champions

ABILENE — Sweetwater’s Senior League (ages 15-16) Blue Jays found themselves in an unfamiliar spot early on in Tuesday’s District 5 championship game with Abilene Wylie’s Tigers.
The Blue Jays, who de-feated Wylie in both regular-season meetings, trailed 7-1 after just two innings.
But Sweetwater came back to cut Wylie’s lead to 7-6 after a five-run third and finally took the lead with a nine-run sixth inning en route to a 19-14 victory at the Wylie field.

No Shorts Cuts volleyball camps planned for July

A No Short Cuts Volleyball Camp for students entering grades 7-8 will be held Wednesday, July 6, at the Sweetwater High School gym. The camp will be from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1-4 p.m. Cost is $50. This is an all-skills camp that will emphasize the six individual skills as well as applying those skills in group and team play. The primary focus is to improve each player's individual skills during the off-season. The areas of concern that will be addressed are ball control, movement, attacking and blocking. All campers will receive a T-shirt.

Lady Mustang basketball camp is held

Girls who recently com-pleted grades 1-7 attended a Lady Mustang Basketball Camp this past Monday through Thursday at Sweet-water Middle School.
SMS coaches Sandra Gra-ham, Jill Locklar and Carla Lambert were in charge of the camp, which included several fun team and individual competitions, along with a few Lady Mustang basketball players.

Mustang basketball camp is held

Boys who recently completed grades 3-8 attended Mustang Basketball Camps this past Monday through Thursday at the Sweetwater High School gym.
SHS boys basketball coach Al Hunt was in charge of both the morning session, which was for boys who have completed grades 3-5, and the afternoon session for boys who have completed grades 6-8.

SW teams do well at local tourney

A pair of Sweetwater baseball teams made up of 7- and 8-year-olds took first and third place, respective-ly, at a tournament held here on June 4-5.
The two local teams were the Select, which won first-place honors, and the Venom, which took third place at the event.
The Select split its two pool games, losing to the Brownwood Reds 14-12 and beating the Dyess Athletics 8-1. In bracket play, the Select edged the San Angelo Rangers 13-12 on June 4, then beat the Venom 14-9 on June 5 to earn a rematch later that day with Brownwood in the final.

Just two of Sweetwater’s Little League teams are still contending for a District 5 title after two rounds of play.
Sweetwater’s Senior League Blue Jays will, in fact, play for a title after a 24-1 domination of Abilene South’s Rangers Thursday. Sweetwater faces Wylie’s Tigers at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Wylie.
