Banquet speaker

Roscoe native Dan Hunter served as guest speaker at the sports banquet. Hunter is currently a professor at Tarleton State University in the College of Agriculture and Human Sciences.
He was previously chief executive office/manager of the Southwestern Peanut Growers’ Association. Prior to that, he served as the government relations representative for the National Cotton Council, and also worked as a primary legislative staff member for former Congressman Larry Combest as well as for Congressman Fred Grandy.

Basketball camps set

Sweetwater will host a pair of basketball camps in early June.
A Lady Mustang Basketball Camp will be held June 4-7 at the middle school gym on 305 Lamar Street for students completing grades 2-8. Camp sessions will be from 9 a.m. to noon. The cost is $35 which includes a T-shirt. Pre-registration is appreciated.
A concession stand will be available. The camp’s goal is to improve players’ skills through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.

Cain inducted into Big Country Hall of Fame

Former Texas Tech University and Senior PGA Tour golfer John Paul Cain of Sweetwater was inducted this past Monday into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame in Abilene. He is shown speaking at the banquet held at the Abilene Civic Center.

Nine Lady ‘Stangs get 5-3A recognition

Sweetwater advanced to the playoffs in softball for the first time in 15 years this season, and nine of the team’s players have earned all-District 5-3A honors to recognize that success.

Cain induction to Big Country Hall is set for Monday

ABILENE — John Paul Cain of Sweetwater, who first made a name for himself as a college golfer at Texas Tech University and later as an amateur golfer and two-time winner on the Senior PGA Tour, will be among nine new inductees into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame on Monday.
The 11th annual Big Country Hall of Fame induction banquet will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Abilene Civic Center.

New coordinators join Mustang staff

Zach Harrell and John Ward are the new football offensive and defensive coordinators, respectively, at Sweetwater High School under Shane Mobley, who was hired in April to serve as Sweetwater’s head football coach and athletic director.

SW bikers have top-two finishes at Ballinger event

Four Sweetwater residents had top-two finishes at the 37th annual Colorado River Bike Fest held April 28 in Ballinger.
Francisco Herrera won the 5K bike ride’s men adult division (ages 18-59) and Cassie Reyes was second in the women adult division (18-59). Michelle Mabrey won the women adult division (18-59) in the 5K event and Kirk Maberry was second among men in the 60K event.

SHS powerlifters recognized

Several Sweetwater High School powerlifters who recently competed at state meets were honored Monday at a meeting of the Sweetwater Independent School District. Resolutions which recognized the athletes for their accomplishments were presented at the meeting.

Banyard begins NFL minicamp with Jags today

Joe Banyard — a former Sweetwater High School athlete who spent his last two collegiate seasons as a star running back at the University of Texas-El Paso — is scheduled to be in Jacksonville, Fla. today to begin a three-day NFL rookie minicamp after signing with the Jacksonville Jaguars as an undrafted free agent.
Banyard is one of the team’s 17 undrafted rookie free agents, which include LSU defensive end Kendrick Adams, Ohio State center Mike Brewster and Virginia Tech receiver Jarrett Boykin.
