It’s a great time of year

May 7, 2013

When the month of May arrives in Texas, only the best spring high school athletes and teams are still competing. And last year, for the first time in memory, Nolan County was not represented at the state track meet in Austin.

Mustangs steal their way to next round of playoffs

May 6, 2013

CRANE — Game 3 of the best-of-3 bi-district playoff between Sweetwater and Fabens was tied 6-6 in the top of the seventh inning on Saturday. The Mustangs had the go-ahead runner, Bray Amos, at third base with Shawn Campbell at bat and looking at a 2-2 count with two outs.
But then, all of a sudden, Amos streaked for home as Fabens pitcher Eric Ochoa was still in his windup.
Amos scored, Sweetwater was suddenly up 7-6, and all that was left was for Mus-tang pitcher Cole Maxwell to get three more outs.

Pampa ends SW’s run in area round

May 6, 2013

LUBBOCK — Sweetwater got the first hit in Friday’s Region I-3A area softball playoff game with Pampa on a one-out single by Mor-gan Gomez in the bottom of the first inning.
But it took the Lady Mus-tangs another five innings to get their second hit, and by then Pampa was firmly in control as the Lady Har-vesters ended Sweetwater’s year with a 5-0 victory.

‘Stangs hold off Fabens for win in Game 1

May 6, 2013

CRANE — Despite some missed opportunities, the Sweetwater baseball team got its first playoff series in nine years off to a success-ful start Friday.
But the Mustangs’ 5-4 bi-district win over Fabens in Game 1 of their best-of-3 series was suspenseful right down to the end.
Sweetwater stranded 10 runners in the contest, nine of them in the last four in-nings, but still was able to rally from a brief 3-2 defi-cit — and guarantee itself two chances Saturday at Crane High School’s field to advance to the Class 3A area playoffs next week.

Lady ‘Stangs face tough Pampa squad

May 3, 2013

Being the coach of the first Sweetwater High School softball team to win a play-off game may make him the answer to a trivia question some day.
However, Tony Heredia is doing his best to put the Lady Mustangs’ 11-1 win over Pecos in the past and get his team ready to face a tough Pampa team in the Region I-3A area playoffs at 6 p.m. today at Lubbock’s Coronado High School.
“We really haven’t even talked about it,” he said. “We’re proud of the fact we won a bi-district championship, but now we’re ready for the next challenge.”

Mustangs to start p’season vs. Fabens

May 3, 2013

The first playoff trip for Sweetwater High School’s baseball squad since 2004 is lengthy as the team goes to Crane High School to play Fabens in a best-of-3 bi-district series. Game 1 starts at 5 p.m. today, with Game 2 at 2 p.m. Saturday. Game 3, if necessary, gets started 30 minutes after the end of the second game.
It was a long road just to get here. After narrowly missing the playoffs a year ago, Sweetwater (15-13) was the district co-champion this season in 4-3A, where a single game separated the district’s top four teams.

Four more going to state

May 2, 2013

Four more Nolan County athletes have been added to the list of state track qualifiers by the University Interscholastic League.
In Class 3A, Nick Nemir of Sweetwater was announced Wednesday as the ninth, or wild card, qualifier in the boys 300-meter hurdles.
Also, three athletes were added in Class 1A, Division II — Matthew Lowry (boys high jump) and Mason Magness (boys pole vault) of Blackwell and Jesus Leanos (boys 3,200-meter run) of Roscoe. The state meet is set for May 10-11 in Austin.
