Banyard debuts for Vikings

Former Sweetwater High School athlete Joe Banyard saw NFL action for the first time this season Friday with the Minnesota Vikings in the team’s preseason opener with the Houston Texans.
Banyard, a 24-year-old running back, had eight yards on four carries and also caught a 4-yard pass in the game, which the Vikings lost 27-13. He is trying to make the team’s 53-player roster this year after ending last season on the Vikings’ practice squad.

Spikers start at GC

With no starters and only two lettermen — seniors Kayla Chowning and Mikki Reschman — coming back following a 24-win season, Sweetwater High School’s volleyball team will enter the 2013 campaign in full rebuilding mode.
Aly Heredia, Shaneese Brown, Lena Lovelady, Zig-gy Collins, Maddie Jones, Mikealah Foust, Morgan Gomez and either Kensi Chowning or Maddie Berry are the other members of the varsity squad, which starts its season with a 6:15 p.m. match Monday at San Angelo Grape Creek before a dual match at home with Water Valley and Seminole on the following day.

Freeman is taking over at Roscoe

Freeman became Roscoe’s head coach this summer after serving as an assistant at Sweetwater for many years.
Freeman, a 1997 Roscoe High School graduate, was a star player there during the mid-1990s and later played collegiately at Hardin-Simmons University in Abilene before starting his coaching career.

Workouts start Monday

Sweetwater High School begins football practices for the 2013 season Monday at its practice field starting at 7 a.m. All players will work out in shorts until Friday, the first day pads and full contact is permitted.
Sweetwater’s first scrimmage will be held Aug. 16 at Wichita Falls Hirschi, followed by the team’s final scrimmage Thursday, Aug. 22 vs. San Angelo Lake View at Mustang Bowl.

Volleyball workouts start Monday

Sweetwater High School volleyball practices at the SHS gym begin Monday, just one week before the season opens with a match at Grape Creek on Aug. 12. Scrimmages will be at San Angelo Central and Frenship this Friday and Saturday, respectively. There are just three home matches — Aug. 15 vs. Abilene Cooper, Sept. 10 vs. Lamesa and Sept. 24 vs. Levelland — before district play starts Sept. 28 at Monahans. Here is the practice schedule through Thursday, Aug. 8:

7:15-8:45 p.m. — Strength and conditioning
8:45-9:15 a.m. — Break

Area teams begin practice Monday

Roscoe, Highland and Blackwell begin practices for the 2013 football season on Monday.
Roscoe, under new head football coach and former Sweetwater assistant Jake Freeman, will work out from 6:30-10 a.m. at its practice field this week. Freeman, a former standout Roscoe player who gradua-ted in 1997, also was a star player in college at Hardin-Simmons University.
Freeman replaces Jona-than Haseloff, who resigned last month to be the head football coach at Morton High School.

SHS starts practices for all CC athletes on Aug. 12

Sweetwater High School will begin practices for all 2013 cross country athletes on Monday, Aug. 12 at the high school gym, according to SHS cross country coach Christi Adams.
The first-week practices will begin at 8 a.m., accor-ding to Adams.
The 2013 cross country meet schedule has not yet been released.

Terminators place 2nd

The Texas Terminators, a Class A 12-under softball team, placed second recently at San Angelo’s Midnight Madness tournament.
The team finished 2-0-1 in pool play and then beat the Lightning (18-0), Showtime Fastpitch (17-3), CPYL Stealth (9-0), West Texas Venom (6-1), North Texas Stixs (13-2) and Surge (8-0) in bracket play to reach the championship game before losing to the Blue Sox 5-4 in seven innings.

Youth soccer registration begins on Wednesday at Hibbett

Sweetwater Youth Soccer registration will be held on three days this week. It will be at Hibbett Sports, located at 1008 East Broadway, between the hours of 5:30 and 7 a.m. on Wednesday, July 31; Thursday, Aug. 1; and Friday, Aug. 2. No late registration will be held.
Sweetwater Youth Soccer is open to girls and boys who are between ages 4-12. Registration will be $50 per child and $45 for each ad-ditional sibling. Sponsor-ships are also being accepted. For more information, contact Patience McCoy at (325) 829-2059.
